The dusty, museum-like shelves of my mother’s house are still dotted with the barely preserved artefacts of my lifelong obsession with making. As the sun melts over the horizon, turning the rice paddies gold and throwing shadows on the nearby temples of Angkor, it’s a cue for Pactics’ 350 staff to finish up for the day. Unlike most of Cambodia’s 700,000-plus garment factory workers, who often toil well into the night, Pactics staff work a standard eight-hour day. The company only recruits from the local area so that staff can easily commute home to their families.
