The term ticking has become synonymous with a cotton or linen cloth featuring crisp, narrow stripes; a cloth that segues comfortably from under-counter curtains in utility rooms to smart upholstery in elegant drawing rooms, and everything in between. In truth, the name refers as much to the tight weave of the textile as it does to the stripe. Sometimes a tight twill but more authentically a firm herringbone, the ticking weave originated with the need to encase the fillings of early mattresses in a way that prevented straw, chaff, leaves, rushes, bracken, feathers and other fillings from poking through and prickling sleepers awake. The invention of glassmaking processes that enable the manufacture of large and relatively cheap panes of glass is fairly recent. Aesthetically, this is fortunate: the availability of only small panes of glass led to the development of intricately crafted leaded lights as a means of forming larger windows and, later, the need to divide wooden casements and sashes with glazing bars. Glassmaking is an ancient craft with window glass once a valuable commodity. The various methods of blowing molten glass to form panes resulted in the characteristic straight ripples, bubbles, and circular lines that are so alluring in original windows. An old, once derelict animal barn on a farm nestled in the Essex countryside, is now a hive of activity as the new workshop space of Lam Lighting. From here, the small team of local craftspeople handmake the beautifully pure and natural porcelain shades for which the artisanal company has become synonymous. For Rebecca Bethell, the worst houses make the best projects, so she was delighted to come across an Edwardian semi that had been empty for years. The four floors of living space, large, square rooms, high ceilings, and location close to shops and her sons’ school ticked all the boxes. We have omitted the lardons traditionally found in tartiflette and given it a twist by adding some celeriac.
