The beauty and versatility of wood make it the perfect choice for outdoor use. Timber cladding has been employed for centuries, with weatherboarding or shiplap – which has rebates cut on each edge to enable neighbouring boards to fit over one another – adorning many homes and outbuildings. As a fencing material, timber defines garden boundaries and provides privacy, and decking sets the tone for relaxation areas. One thing all timber products have in common, though, is a tendency to rot, so regular care and maintenance is essential. Gentle prodding with a penknife is a good way to determine the extent of rotten areas. MUSSEL SOUP WITH TOMATOES, PARSLEY AND GARLIC SERVES 6 This is my recreation of a dish I ate on a warm Saturday in late October, overlooking the sea in San Marco di Castellabate in the Cilento. When the bowl arrived, I was first struck by the rich red liquid the mussels sat in, and then by the flavour, which was staggering in its delicious simplicity. It quietly lets the mussels sing. Delicately diaphanous and woven in varying degrees of opacity, sheer fabrics have long been imbued with an air of intrigue and romance. In part, this is because of their ethereal handle and weight, but undoubtedly, it is also because over centuries sheer textiles have been used for both clothing and interior decoration in ways that partly tantalise and partly obscure – from transparent veils to bed drapery and embroidered window nets.
