A rich diversity of ironmongery is found on the doors and windows of period homes, and includes locks, hinges, handles, knobs, knockers, latches and letter plates. While they are, essentially, functional items, many have wonderful aesthetic appeal. Ironmongery can exude craftsmanship and says much about the status and period of a house, and it should be valued in the same way as other antique objects. Early fittings were made from wrought iron, but later items were brass, bronze, cast iron or steel. They may be polished, lacquered or painted; all are likely to require maintenance at some point.
