Hailing from Cebu, Cobonpue designs and manufactures furniture pieces which have become artistic statements. His journey towards success began in 1987 when he travelled to New York to study Industrial Design at the Pratt Institute. I studied architecture at the University of the Philippines in the 1970s. I’m of that martial law generation that looked to Leandro “Lindy” V Locsin as a role model in design and practice. His was one of the largest and most successful firms from the 1960s to the 1990s when he passed away. His office continues today, a testament to his appreciation of corporate practice, as he had prepared for continuity early on. His main legacy, however, remains his body of work, its influence on Filipino architecture, and his contributions to the country’s creative and cultural endeavours. PHILIPPINES National Museum of Natural History Located at the Agrifina Circle of Rizal Park, the National Museum of Natural History is an architectural marvel that has retained its original Neoclassical façade out front, but houses a spacious, airy, expertly-designed array of galleries and interactive learning spaces within. The structure housing the museum was originally built in 1940 to house the Ministries of Agriculture and Commerce. It is actually a twin of the Finance Building which now houses the National Museum of Anthropology, as both buildings were designed by the architect Antonio Toledo who also designed the Manila City Hall. The twin structures were destroyed during the Second World War and were subsequently rebuilt based on Toledo’s original plans. Today, the area where both buildings and the National Museum for the…

It begins simply, with a circular base of light pink and white cubes of kombu-cured hamachi and pickled jicama, daikon and green apple against a pure white plate. Then, a diaphanous apple cider gelée cut to the exact same diameter of the base is gently laid atop, flecks of dill, marigold petals and fennel pollen suspended within it glistening in the light. Then there are more layers, as a quenelle of golden smoked pike roe is laid alongside emerald-hued nasturtium leaves atop the gelée. Finally, the entire affair is crowned by a brilliant red nasturtium blossom, while a deep green sauce of nasturtium and lemon verbena whey surrounds the assemblage.
