1 STUDIO LIGHTS Our lighting setup for all the images here is very simple: just two basic lights with long softboxes. There’s no need to get any more complicated than this when starting out. THE WEEK’S TOP HEADLINES IN PHOTOGRAPHY The Light L16 has gained a reputation for breaking away from camera-making orthodoxy. Eschewing the one-lens approach, this pocket-sized model uses 16 individual lenses, intelligently choosing which combination of 10 or more to use for each shot. It’s been available in the US for a while, and it’s just been launched in the UK, so let’s take a closer look at what it offers. Measuring 165 x 84.5 x 24.05mm, the L16 is small enough to slip into your pocket. It’s controlled via a 5-inch touchscreen on the rear, and has a rubberised grip for steady handling. Replicating the cyanotype effect in the digital darkroom is much easier than you might think – in fact, some cameras even feature this effect as a preset style. However, nothing quite beats the satisfaction of making a genuine cyanotype print. The cyanotype printing process is a contact-printing method, so the first step is to create a negative, which we’ll then print on to contact-print film using a modern-day inkjet printer. This can then be used to make a genuine cyanotype print. Naturally, this is a fairly time-consuming job, and not for those who lust after instant gratification. There’s a long tradition of depiciting the nude in both art and photography. The first additional lens that most photographers buy for their camera is a telephoto, and here we’ve rounded up eight reasonably priced alternatives competing for your cash. They include lenses designed for full-frame cameras and some made specifically for smaller ‘crop sensor’ cameras with APS-C or Micro Four Thirds sensors. A full-frame lens will give you more ‘reach’ on a crop-sensor camera, but lenses designed specifically for these smaller sensor sizes will tend to be cheaper and lighter, so if you own a Nikon, Pentax or Canon DSLR, you’ll need to decide which to go for.
