DxO has confirmed an update to its popular Nik Collection set of plugins. DxO bought the Nik Collection from Google two years ago, and gave the plugins an update last year. This latest Nik Collection 2.0 update adds 42 ‘En Vogue’ presets to the 156 existing options, spread across four of its seven plugins. Ten of these are added to each of the Color Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro and Analog Efex Pro plugins, with a further 12 new HDR presets added to HDR Efex Pro. The plugins, which also include Viveza, Dfine, Sharpener Pro, are compatible with Adobe’s most popular editing programs, namely Photoshop, Lightroom Classic and Elements. Tamron has released details and pricing of its new SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD wide-angle prime lens, which has been designed to offer premium quality performance with full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLRs. The lens is being launched to celebrate the 40th birthday of the Tamron SP range – the SP stands for Superior Performance, and the range has become a favorite choice of enthusiasts. The lens is constructed of 14 elements in 10 groups, including four LD (Low Dispersion) and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) elements. These are said to ensure that chromatic aberrations are eliminated, and that the lens offers high-resolution performance right to the edges of the frame, even at the wide f/1.4 maximum aperture. Exposure is arguably the most important consideration in the photographic process, since the amount of light reaching the camera’s sensor directly influences all image characteristics, including brightness, detail and colour. Regarding brightness, the intensity and position of light sources within the frame is of utmost relevance, as this controls where viewers first look within the composition. While correctly using this device is a basic photographic skill, extra care must be taken when attempting creative techniques. You can’t swing a cat online these days without hitting a cute/funny photo or video of a… cat. You won’t be surprised to learn that people where enjoying cat photos way before the advent of the internet and social media – but you may be surprised at how elaborate some of the earliest comedy cat images were. PetaPixel has been looking at the history of feline photography, and the earliest example it features is the image shown at top-left above, shot by an unknown photographer in 1898. The other images you can see above were shot by American photographer Harry Whittier Frees, who, starting in 1914, created a series of images of cats dressed in costumes and posed with props, which featured on postcards, in magazines, and in children’s books.…

Favoured by professional photographers all over the world, 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses are ideal for shooting action sports, wildlife, weddings and plenty more besides. The availability of short, medium and fairly long telephoto focal lengths, combined with a fast and constant aperture that enables a tight depth of field and rapid shutter speeds, is a potent mix. A drawback of 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses is that they’re necessarily bulky and quite heavy, weighing in at around 1.5kg, as well as being pricey.
