1 HOUR In this project we’ll show you how to balance camera settings, ambient light and flash to isolate a subject. The most important factors when isolating a subject from its background are lighting and focus, and in this case we’re going to be using two methods to control these variables: changing the aperture and changing the shutter speed. We’re using a flashgun on a light stand with a shoot-through umbrella to diffuse the light, placed camera-left of our still-life subject. For the first method we’ll only change the aperture value of our lens (the f-stop) to darken the background and then light our subject with flash to make the fruit stand out from the scene. Leica’s M-series rangefinders have been behind some of the 20th century’s most iconic images, but they’ve never exactly been affordable; the new M-E (Typ 240), however, comes with a price tag more in line with that of a full-frame DSLR. The M-E (Typ 240) updates the original M-E (Typ 220) model, which was announced in 2012 and which was designed to be an affordable alternative to then-current M-series models such as the M9. It’s priced at £3,500 in the UK and $3,995 in the US, which places it roughly at the same level as the recently announced limited-edition Leica CL Urban Jungle model. There are different selection tools for different tasks in Photoshop. If you want to make a rough selection, you might use the Lasso Tool; if you want to select a portion of an image, like a sky, it’s usually best to use the Quick Selection Tool or the Magic Wand Tool. And then there’s the Pen Tool… While it might be one of the trickier Photoshop tools to master, the Pen Tool rewards those who persevere with a control over selections like no other tool. As professional wildlife photographers, we often travel to the world’s most remote places, in search of rare species in extreme conditions. In the never-ending search for unique behaviour and interactions in the wild, we experience bone-freezing and blood-boiling temperatures. National Geographic has announced the winners of its 2019 Travel Photo Contest. Weimin Chu won the Grand Prize for his beautiful twilight image of Upernavik, a fishing village in western Greenland, which he shot during a three-month project documenting life on the world’s largest island The competition comprises three categories: Nature, Cities and People, and attracted thousands of entries from photographers around the world.
