When you strip your compositions back, all of the viewer’s attention will go straight to the main subject matter with no distraction, which means it’s very important to carefully consider where that subject or subjects appear in the frame. “To maintain balance in my photographs, I start with a loose rule of thirds, always keeping my subject within the middle two thirds of the frame,” explains MacVicar. “I then decide how much of the frame the subject requires for each composition. When it comes to adopting a more measured and refined approach to your landscape photography, taking the time to consider where each element sits in the frame is more important than ever. 1 HOUR The technique of intentional camera movement, or ICM, involves moving the camera during a long exposure in order to introduce motion blur. You can either hand-hold your camera or use a tripod, and it normally works best when the camera is moved in just one direction, which makes a three-way tripod head (aka a pan-and-tilt head) the obvious choice use; but for this project we’re using a ball-head. You might think this sounds odd; after all, three-way tripod heads make this so much easier, as all you have to do is unlock one of the three directional movement controls and you can pan or tilt the camera in one direction smoothly and with precision. If something in the frame doesn’t add anything to your composition, then it’s probably detracting from it – have another look, and compose your shot again to eliminate the unnecessary objects. “When I think I have the perfect composition, I mark that spot and spend a few more minutes looking for a better composition,” explains MacVicar. “Sometimes you’re a few metres away from composing a better photograph.” “I call it ‘The Chaos Master’ – l cut out all unnecessary and distracting things. Bodies of water and interesting skies can be great ways to add texture and interest to your landscape shots; the inclusion of dramatic texture can alter the mood of the image and help to draw the viewer in. However, this overload of texture can also overcomplicate a scene and distract from your main subject. This is why a long exposure is the ideal technique to employ for simplifying your imagery.
