The use of longer exposures is perhaps the most well known and popular shutter speed technique. Slowing the shutter speed is, for many photographers, the first technique attempted when learning to take manual control of their camera. While it can become an overused trick, employing a lengthened exposure has the potential to add superior atmosphere to even a relatively plain scene, rendering vegetation as creative streaks, and bodies of flowing water as attractive lines of misty blur. These re-imagined features now appear more ‘alive’ and help to create an active composition. The subject and environment interact in a natural-looking way, appearing more similar to how we see them in real life, with our own eyes. 1 SELECT YOUR CAMERA SETTINGS A good starting exposure is 1/30 sec, so select this in shutter priority mode and set Auto ISO. Set your focus mode to AF-C or AI-SERVO so that your camera will keep tracking your subject. Enable multiple AF points and set drive mode to continuous. 2 PICK YOUR SUBJECT Panning works best when your subject is moving past you rather than towards or away from you – a car driving along a road is a great example. If you’re photographing a moving bird or animal, aim to smoothly track their head to keep this sharp. 3 THINK ABOUT BACKGROUND The background is important for a good panning shot. A uniform background like blue sky won’t create any visual movement streaks, so you want a textured…

1 SET UP A WIRELESS SYSTEM Although your camera and flash may be able to communicate wirelessly, using a third-party trigger may be necessary to enable the maximum flash sync speed to be exceeded. Alternatively, use a third party flashgun. Opt for radio triggers for maximum reliability. 2 ADJUST LIGHT OUTPUT Calculate the ideal balance of ambient and artificial light for a perfect exposure. Turn the flash power down if it’s too bright and blows highlights on your subject. A setting of 1/8 power is a reliable starting point, and you can then increase or decrease this as required. 3 SELECT EXPOSURE Choose an f-stop that enables you to increase the shutter speed above the maximum flash sync – usually around 1/200 sec. Begin with f/8 and adjust as necessary,…

SIMULATE A LONG EXPOSURE When a slow shutter speed isn’t possible, create a similar effect in Photoshop Since shutter speed is so precisely stepped, often in as little as 1/3-stop increments, it’s possible to unknowingly increase the exposure time to a setting just below that with which you’re capable of shooting a blur-free image under current conditions. This is especially true when shooting handheld, without the support of a tripod or monopod. In these cases, the effect of camera shake may be so subtle that you fail to notice a lack of fine detail until you open the file on a computer screen after the shoot. Floating food stack images are popular in food photography and advertising, and in this video tutorial we’ll show you how to pull off a mouthwatering trick shot by using a combination of shooting skills and Photoshop techniques. We begin by setting up a series of wire platforms for each item in the burger, then placing the items in the stack and taking the shot. We then remove the stack and shoot an empty frame. Next, we piece together the frames in Photoshop and remove the wires at the edges. However, we’re still left with visible parts of the wire the food is resting on, and for this we need to use Photoshop’s powerful Patch Tool to remove all traces of the wires and finesse the image. Sigma has confirmed that its first full-frame mirrorless camera, the Sigma fp, will start shipping from October 25. The company has also confirmed pricing – and the fp, which it says is the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame camera, will be more affordable than many had predicted, with a body-only price of £1,999 in the UK and $1,899 in the United States. Even more tempting than that body only price is a kit which pairs the Sigma fp with the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens, which will cost £2,399 in the UK and $2,199 in the US. 1 SET UP YOUR TRIPOD Since we’ll be using a lengthened exposure duration, a tripod is essential. Scout for a scene where you can get close to the edge of crops or major vegetation that will model the wind for you and help convey movement in the shot. 2 SELECT CAMERA HEIGHT Choose a level to position the camera to make more of foreground detail. Objects that appear further away will show less blur, so place the camera just above the height of foreground objects, extending top leg sections first for maximum stability. 3 USE AV MODE While we want to control shutter speed, as we’re shooting a landscape we also need sufficient depth of field. With some genres of photography, such as macro, sharpness is everything. The goal with macro is often to capture as much detail as possible, so where this is unachievable images can fail. Wildlife Photographer of the Year has announced the winners of its 2019 contest, with Chinese photographer Yongqing Bao taking the overall title for his remarkable image of a standoff between a Tibetan fox and a marmot in China’s Qilian Mountains Nature Reserve. Describing the image, Bao says: “[the marmot] had spotted the fox an hour earlier, and sounded the alarm to warn its companions to get back underground. But the fox itself hadn’t reacted, and was still in the same position. So the marmot had ventured out of its burrow again to search for plants to graze on. The fox continued to lie still. Digital SLR cameras have been around since the turn of the century, steadily evolving into the full-frame bodies that are now available from Canon, Nikon and Pentax. Specialist Leica cameras aside, Sony launched the first full-frame mirrorless ‘system’ body with interchangeable lenses in 2013, and remained a one-stop mirrorless shop for five years with its A7 and A9 bodies. Nikon and Canon finally responded a year ago with the high-end Z 7 and EOS R respectively, followed by the lower-priced Z 6 and EOS RP. Learning to control shutter speed is often the first camera skill we learn when starting out in creative photography. It’s the most visually apparent of all the components of the exposure process, as even minor experimentation with lengthening or shortening the duration can have obvious impacts on the way detail is rendered in the final frame. Simply by stretching the exposure out by halving the indicated shutter speed, such as from 1/100 sec to 1/50 sec, we can radically change the tone of a composition by conveying movement instead of freezing the subject in a static frame. This explains why shutter speed is seen more as an artistic choice than a practical one, even though there are basic light control functions in adjusting for how long the sensor is exposed…

1 CHOOSE YOUR SUBJECT Intentionally moving the camera during exposure can open up many creative opportunities. This can be used with any subject, but it really lends itself to landscapes by enabling you to concentrate on lines, form and colour over details, to capture the scene in a unique way. 2 DECIDE ON MOVEMENT The look of your image will depend on the speed, direction and smoothness of camera movement. Consider how movement complements a scene. Continuously changing your ISO setting is laborious, time-consuming, and can result in missed image opportunities in fast-paced conditions. More seriously, it’s possible to forget to adjust the sensitivity between shots, resulting in images that have been shot at an insufficiently fast shutter speed but are only slightly blurred, meaning you fail to notice a lack of sharpness until the shoot is over.
