ADSLR or mirrorless camera is really essential for shooting fast-moving targets, and you’ll benefit from a model with a fast continuous burst rate and autofocus system. It’s an added bonus if your body is fairly rugged, so you can take it outdoors without worrying about weather damage. In terms of glass, a zoom lens such as a 70-200mm can be a versatile starting option, depending on the size and distance of the subject in question. Smaller creatures such as birds will require much greater reach, but as prime telephotos can cost thousands, a teleconverter such as a 1.4x can be a versatile accessory to invest in, increasing the effective focal length of your existing lens without a substantial loss of light or image quality. Once you’ve gathered your gear and sussed out the best places to photograph the native fauna, the next step is to get practical and start shooting. Of course, specific camera settings will vary widely depending on the subject and time of day, but the same basic principles apply at all times. Semi-automatic shooting modes enable you to adapt quickly while retaining some control. Choose Shutter Priority for subjects on the move, or Aperture Priority for those that are grazing or immobile. Exposure compensation is useful in overcoming tricky lighting situations, such as backlit birds against a bright sky, but you can also intentionally underexpose images to generate creative silhouettes. If you know where your subject will appear, such as around bird feeders, you can pre-focus manually on the target spot.…

Search for ‘Nasa images’ and you’ll find a huge array of photos of stars, nebulae, galaxies, planets, astronauts and more. Many of these images are high-res, and they’re all free to download – and you can make use of these incredible images to create a composite that’s truly stellar. For this video tutorial we’ve made use of the following images: PIA13005 (Orion Dream Stars), PIA08653 (Sword of Orion), S89-51923 (space helmet) PIA19821 (Nustar), and PIA03606 (Crab Nebula), combining the images using Photoshops tools such as layer masks and blending modes. Canon has continued its ongoing tease of the EOS R5, revealing that the camera possesses “cinema industry-standard” specs including 8K raw internal, and “will shoot comfortably on high-end production sets” such as commercials, dramas and documentaries. In fact, the Canon EOS R5’s specs are so powerful that the manufacturer claims it can act as a partner to its newly announced Canon EOS C300 Mark III cinema camera, as it “boasts features seen only in high-end cinema cameras many times its price point and video features no other mirrorless camera on the market offers”. Some of the most interesting animals wake up just after twilight, and while this is a magical time to photograph them, the lack of light poses a difficulty. Artificial lighting isn’t intrinsic to the genre, but some added illumination is necessary to record the activities of nocturnal mammals such as badgers or foxes. At dusk, one solution is to crank up the ISO, but as the light levels fall further the use of flash becomes unavoidable. A setup of two wireless flashguns positioned off-camera can be effective, with one used to light the background and the other the subject itself. The Royal Horticultural Society has announced the winners of the 2020 RHS Photographic Competition, which attracted an outstanding selection of images from amateur and professional photographers from around the world. The Overall Winner was American photographer Helen McLain for her image Chicago Prairie. Entered into the Urban Gardening category, the image depicts the dramatic backdrop of the city’s skyline at sunset, contrasting with swaths of plants flowering in Lurie Garden, Millennium Park.
