BULB MODE In modes like Manual and Aperture or Shutter Priority, the max shutter speed you can shoot at is 30 seconds. We’ll be using Bulb mode, which enables you to use a remote shutter release to keep the shutter open for as long as needed – up to several minutes for astro work. We also pushed Colin’s ISO to 1000 on his EOS R, and opened the aperture to f/2.8 to let in as much light as possible. The Displace filter is one of Photoshop’s more unusual and specialised tools. It enables you to distort the pixels in one image based on the brightness values of another, after you’ve turned that second image into a displacement map by converting it to black and white. When you apply the filter, pixels in the first image are shifted up or down, and left or right, depending on the values you enter in the filter’s dialog. This enables you to create some really interesting 3D effects, and in this video tutorial we’ll use the filter, along with layer blending modes, to combine an image of a mask with an image of a tree to create the effect of a tree with a face – you can use the filter on your…

OUR APPRENTICE SAYS… For this shot, we set up my Canon EOS R on Chris’ equatorial mount again, to track the stars for a minute and a half to make sure they were nicely exposed. I then took a second, shorter, exposure to get a sharp foreground, illuminating the abbey with my torch to make sure this stood out, and combined the two images in Photoshop to create the final result. I loved every minute of my shoot with Chris. As someone who predominantly photographs wildlife it was a real eye opener, and it’s taught me much more about my camera kit – I didn’t even know it was capable of some of the things Chris showed me it could do!
