You’d think it would be easy to capture attractive images of plants and flowers. When compared to the other subjects a photographer may encounter, the assumption is that a stationary flower poses little difficulty. However, the colourful nature of flowers means that accurate reproduction is critical, especially under mixed lighting conditions such as you’ll encounter in the field. Composition can also often prove unexpectedly complex, as finding the best focal length, angle and shooting position is complicated by a constricted working environment. Lens choice plays an important part in the styling of a shot, and needs to be carefully considered before a selection is made. In macro imaging, lighting can quickly become the most challenging characteristic to address, the closer to the subject you move the camera. Since you’ll often be working at incredibly short distances between the subject and the end of the lens, the use of on-camera flash is all but impossible. This is because of the steep angle created between the flash head and subject plane, which creates two problems. Firstly, the spread of the light from the flash is unlikely to be broad enough to cover the subject – the flash essentially fires over the top of the subject, either missing it entirely or producing unattractive transitions. Shooting plants and flowers is challenging enough, but while they may be prone to movement through wind motion, they are, in most circumstances, fairly stationary. Insects, spiders and other arthropods, as well as small mammals like shrews, are an entirely different challenge. Not only do we have to contend with the technical hurdles of the macro photography genre, but we also have to be able to work with highly mobile subjects that are rapid and easily disturbed – if we attempt to move in close with a short macro optic to achieve high magnification, we’re likely to activate a subject’s alarm responses, which usually includes an immediate dart for cover! International Garden Photographer of the Year runs a number of standalone contests in addition to the prestigious annual main competition, and the winners of the 2020 Macro Art Project have just been announced. Brazilian photographer Bruno Militelli won first prize for his stunning abstract mono image, entitled Botanic Loop, which shows the spiral-shaped structure of Passiflora (passion fruit) tendrils, which are used by climbing plants like claws to affix themselves for support and provide a stable place to grow and flower. Whether you’re exploring city streets, trekking through the countryside or jetting off to the other side of the world, a bag full of lenses can feel like a real burden. A superzoom enables you to travel light, delivering everything from generous wide-angle coverage to serious telephoto reach, all in a single and relatively compact lens. As well as being more travel-friendly, a superzoom enables you to react instantly to photo opportunities that demand wide-ranging focal lengths with a simple flick of the wrist. Macro has to be one of the most engaging genres of photography. While landscapes have the power to be awe-inspiring, and portraits can stir up core emotions, macro brings about surprise, intrigue and wonder. Highmagnification images take us into a world that we all have access to but seldom see. Close-up shots of insects, flower petals and textured surfaces create the sense of glimpsing an alternative dimension, made all the more exciting by the knowledge that many of these frames can be found without leaving our own garden. As with any niche subject, there are key challenges and techniques that are specific to the genre. Many photographers new to the macro genre wrongly assume that the key to the best images is to select the highest-powered lens available and get as close as possible to the subject, for frame-filling shots; but while this approach can sometimes yield impressive perspectives with small subjects, it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. Making the subject as large as possible in the frame does potentially reveal more detail, but it can also exclude relevant peripheral details that would add to the impact of the composition. This high level of magnification is also not always achievable, even with the correct equipment.
