DALES SUNRISE I’m a huge fan of shooting before sunrise; the light can be magical if everything comes together. This is about 20 minutes before dawn; by using a long lens I was able to compress the perspective in the image to emphasise the mist and layers, which are being subtly backlit by the sunrise. SNOWDONIA SUNRISE Motion is a great compositional element, and I find myself always looking to try and create motion in water or clouds using ND filters. The UK’s Royal Observatory has announced the winners of this year’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest, the world’s largest astrophotography competition. Chinese photographer Shuchang Dong took top prize for his stunning image of the annular solar eclipse that took place in June 2020, which was taken in Tibet’s Ali region. “We were waiting with anxious minds but we were lucky,” recalls Dong. “Within a minute of the annular eclipse, the sunshine penetrated through the clouds, and afterwards the Sun was sucked into the thick clouds. Irix has announced the Irix 30mm f/1.4 – a manual-focus prime lens for Canon EF, Nikon F and Pentax K DSLRs. The Irix 30mm f/1.4 is based on the design of the firm’s recent Irix Cine 30mm T1.5 cine prime. It’s made for full-frame sensors and, while it’s only available for DSLR mounts, press images show the lens being used with Sony and Canon mirrorless cameras, indicating that it can be used on at least some models via an adapter. The lens carries the Irix Dragonfly moniker, which indicates superior build quality – specifically a reinforced metallic chassis construction, a scratch-resistant finish, an anti-slip focus ring, engraved markings filled with UV-reactive paint, and seals to protect against dust and water ingress. 1 DIY CAMERA COVER Neil says… When shooting in changeable weather conditions or where there’s a lot of spray, it’s important to keep you camera dry. I use a chamois cloth that I custom-fit to the camera and whatever lens I happen to be using at the time with stainless steel pegs. It’s gear hacking at it’s best, and I’ve not yet tested a waterproof cover that performs better! 2 STURDY TRIPOD Neil says… Landscape exposures can last anywhere from a second or two to several minutes, so it’s vital to have a rock-solid support. We often hear portrait shooters talk about underexposing the ambient light, then using a flash to pick out the subject. This can result in atmospheric portraits with bold skies – so why not use the same method to create a bold landscape? This way, we can underexpose the scene for a dramatic evening sky, then pick out parts of our scene with the flash. The problem is – like the neolithic burial chamber here – that subjects in landscape photos tend to be larger than people, so a single flash may not be big enough or strong enough to light the entire thing.
