If you live in large parts of the UK, or in any sprawling urban area where snow is sporadic in nature, it’s often an exciting moment when you gaze out of a window and see the first flurries begin to settle on the ground. It may be tempting to grab a camera, a lens, whatever coat you have to hand and head out on a shoot – after all, thin layers of snow may not stay for long. However, arguably more than with any other season, planning ahead for winter shoots is essential. It’s not just about ensuring that you get the images you’re after – in the months where the weather can change rapidly and the temperature can fall to dangerous lows, safety is also a consideration. After setting an alarm for between 05:00 and 05:30, we can head out to arrive on location before the sun rises. This is where our planning comes in handy – we have already visited in the daylight hours and in clear conditions, so we know exactly where we need to set up for our first shot of the day. We will aim to be the first to visit the location that day, so we don’t waste a great composition opportunity with an expanse of undisturbed snowfall. Approach the scene with care, watching where you stand and using a methodical process for setting up your gear. With contrast so high, it’s vital to guard detail at the extremes of the tonal range, the highlights in particular. Activating your camera’s Dynamic Range Optimization (Sony), Active D-Lighting (Nikon) or Auto Lighting Optimizer (Canon) will widen the dynamic range, helping to reduce clipping. For in-camera JPEGs, the file will actually be processed, outputting a finished image. For raw shooting, nothing will be done to the files but often, with the respective optimiser online, the camera will adjust metering to preserve highlights. This can be a good way to tailor camera behaviour in extreme lighting.…

A blocking winter anticyclone brings with it low winds and stable conditions, due to the high pressure, often resulting in several days of cloudless skies and deep cold. This is great for capturing frosts, but the featureless blue skies can create unbalanced negative space. In these situations, choose compositions with more foreground than sky – a two-thirds or even seven-eighths weighting. Alternatively, lower the camera and pitch up, ensuring the horizon is broken by objects, such as mountains or trees. A longer focal length also limits unnecessary peripheral space.…

Wildlife Photographer of the Year announced the winners of its main 2021 competition in October, and now it’s announced the shortlist for the People’s Choice Award, the winner of which is selected by members of the public. WPOTY is run by the UK’s Natural History Museum, and this year’s main contest attracted some 50,000 entries, from which 100 winning and runner-up images were selected. The People’s Choice shortlist features an additional 25 engaging and relatable images from those entries. Nikon has announced a new standard zoom for its Z-series cameras. The Z 28-75mm f/2.8 boasts a versatile zoom range that runs from wide-angle to telephoto, plus a fast constant f/2.8 aperture, making it a great workhorse lens for everything from street photography and portraits to landscapes. The 28-75mm focal length range is a little less wide-angle and a little more telephoto than Nikon’s top-of-the-line Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S, but the new lens is just as fast, yet costs roughly half as much, with a launch price of £1,099 /$1,200, compared to a typical price tag of £1,999 /$2,299 for the older lens. People associate winter with blues and cyans, or cold colours as they are called. On the Kelvin scale, these are technically hot colours, but they are so established as cool hues that it’s important to make sure they are accurately represented in your winter images. While correcting electric blue snow is a must, retaining a cold look will give your images extra context and emotive impact. 1 COMPOSE AND FOCUS Get your framing set and focus the scene, ready for the shot. If you’re using Auto WB, this will be affected by your choice of focus point. In winter, especially around midday, shadow areas can develop a strong cobalt blue cast, which is unrealistic and distracting in most situations. This occurs because of the native prominence of blue wavelengths at noon, made worse by the reflective properties of snow and our keenness to capture frames that have a ‘cold’ look. Adjusting the WB Shift away from blue (to position A3, M1 on a Canon camera, for this image) can help neutralise strong biases while holding the overall cool impression.…

A fiery winter sunrise or sunset is an event to behold, and capturing the balance of rich warm tones and wintery cool hues is paramount. If you prioritise the warm tones, then an unnatural cast may result, but dial down the colour temperature and the drama of the sky can be lost. Try using Ambience Priority (or Skin Tone Priority, depending on camera brand) white balance mode to render snow and ice close to ‘correct’ but with some added warm bias. As November passes into December, and the bright shades of autumnal colour start to fade and the trees begin to shed their leaves, many casual walkers retreat into the comfort of their warm homes. Photographers, however, keep a camera bag packed, ready to head out and capture all the stunning scenery that winter has to offer. If fog or snow is forecast, checking a location in the days leading up to the event can help you plan where you need to set up to capture the best lighting and compositions. While you can never fully predict what the scene might look like on the day, it helps to observe the light characteristics based on the surrounding terrain. If you want a backlit shot of shadows on snow, make sure you find a position where the sun will be visible. If you want a foggy woodland path, visit ahead and work out potential compositions while there’s less time pressure upon you.…

As the sun passes its zenith and the lighting starts to become directional once again, there are opportunities for winter images that embrace the more idealised vision of the season. With some exceptions, the type of scene often depicted on stock sites, product advertising and Christmas cards reflect a warmth that, in reality, can usually only be seen for the briefest of moments. These images capture the more festive elements of this time of year and aim to emote a feeling of cosiness, rather than exposure to the elements, as captured in more wild scenes. It’s generally considered a good approach to get things as correct in-camera as you can, but capturing everything in a single frame isn’t always the best approach in winter. It can even prove more time-consuming, and ultimately yield fewer ideal results. As we’ve seen, winter light is defined by contrasts, of both exposure and colour. These can be extreme at times, and with the power of raw editing, it’s common to find pro photographers opting to fine-tune these characteristics in software rather than in the camera. This is particularly important in extreme conditions, where sub-zero temperatures create additional pressure to get the shot and go as quickly as possible. Panorama and HDR features have been available in Camera Raw and Lightroom for a while, but a third option has been introduced that combines the two. The HDR Panorama command enables you to merge a set of exposures into a detail-rich panorama in a few simple steps. It does this by combining a set of bracketed exposures into an HDR, one for each section of the panorama, and then stitches these segments together.
