The path to becoming a sports photographer isn’t easy. On a professional level, it demands fast telephoto lenses and top-end cameras, neither of which come cheap. And getting accreditation to shoot at professional games is a chicken-and-egg situation where you need a proven track record to get access to shoot and, realistically, you need to be working for a sports photo agency or a newspaper to get the gig in the first place. Samyang Optics has unveiled an updated AF 35mm F1.4 FE II lens that’s optimised for portraits, landscapes, and video. Key innovations on this second-generation lens, which will be sold under the Rokinon brand in North America, include a focus hold button and custom switch. Samyang has built a reputation for its affordable range of manual-focus prime lenses, which are available in a wide variety of mount options. More recently the manufacturer has been launching more autofocus models that offer low-cost alternatives to Sony’s G Master series or Zeiss professional lenses. 1 UNIVERSAL CONNECTOR Light Painting Brushes’ Universal Connector is an implement that’s designed to slide onto and grip the head of most torches with a 0.975 to 1.5-inch diameter. A protruding tapered end is designed to accomodate one of the company’s light painting attachments. 2 ATTACHMENTS Dedicated Light Painting Brushes attachments range from Collapsible Light Swords to fibre-optic brushes, but our patterns were largely produced using the rounded glow from coloured Light Pens, along with Opaque Light Writers and Crystal Light Pens. 3 STRING, TAPE & CARD We used twine and painter’s tape to suspend our torch. Cardboard was placed over the lens to block the beam when removing and attaching multiple accessories during a single exposure. Have you ever shot a landscape under glorious conditions and rushed home to look at the results, only to find they’re slightly underwhelming? This doesn’t necessarily mean you did something wrong; it might simply be that the image needs a little coaxing into life. Often the challenge with landscapes is recording detail in both the brightest and darkest parts of the scene. When the sun is low in the sky this can be doubly difficult, as the highlights will be strong and the shadows may be very deep. As such, on initial inspection the scene can be a disappointment, with detail-less dark areas or blown-out skies. HANG OUT String theory Cut a longer length of twine than needed – it can be shortened later. Make a loop that’s just over half the length of your torch, and secure it with tape. Fix the loop to your torch with tape, ensuring that the twine runs vertically either side of the handle so the lamp hangs parallel to the floor. Use your preferred method to suspend the torch from the ceiling (take care not to cause damage). Push the Universal Connector onto the torch until it grips tightly.
