THE NIKON Z 24-200MM F/4-6.3 VR Some of the latest lenses for mirrorless full-frame cameras that we’ve seen over the last three years have been significantly better than the older DSLR-based siblings. Superzooms are no exception, and the Nikon Z 24-200mm, Canon RF 24-240mm and Tamron 28-200mm all deliver excellent image quality and all-round performance, albeit with quite a lot of help from in-camera corrections. Either way, they’re superb and enormously versatile lenses for Nikon Z, Canon EOS R and Sony Alpha E-mount cameras respectively. The Nikon Z DX 18-140mm, Fujifilm 18-135mm and Panasonic 14-140mm lenses for crop-sensor cameras aren’t quite as impressive in terms of outright image quality. We were pretty impressed by the Laowa 15mm f/4.5 Zero-D Shift lens when it came out, and Laowa has now taken the unusual step of producing a ‘red ring’ version of the lens, which offers some refinements over the original ‘blue ring’ version. The optical configuration is the same, but the diaphragm mechanism has changed. The blue ring lens has just five diaphragm blades, but the new red ring version has 14. This has an effect on highlight rendition and bokeh quality. Laowa puts a premium on ‘sunstar’ rendering from the sun, its reflections and other specular highlights, and where the blue ring lens produces five point sunstars, the new red ring lens generates smoother 14-point sunstars. Built in November 1969, this TVR Tuscan V6 is a classic car lover’s dream, and we wanted to capture the beautiful flowing lines in a magazine-style photoshoot; however, the car’s usual home, a suburban garage, didn’t really work as an appropriately stylish backdrop. Ideally, we’d have brought the car into a studio and lit it with a dozen flashes, but we didn’t have a huge studio or a dozen flashes – but, as you’ll discover in this video tutorial, it’s possible to get the high-quality studio car look without a studio. The winners of the inaugural Storm Photos of the Year competition have been announced – and we’re amazed that someone didn’t think of creating a contest for storm photography long ago, such are the varied and dramatic possibilities for images that capture the weather at its most extreme. The overall winner of the 2021 contest was Alexis Maillard, for his strikingly composed and (naturally) perfectly timed photo of a lightning strike in France’s Chardonnay region (above, top-left), which he captured after briefly leaving the safety of his car during a thunderstorm.
