One of the most challenging aspects of travel photography is that it takes you away from familiar ground and, consequently, any opportunities to replace equipment, maintain your gear and stock up on power and storage solutions. Add to this the difficulty in revisiting and reshooting locations in the ideal lighting, and there’s plenty of scope for stress and frustration to set in. 1 FOCUS POINT SELECTION While multiple focus points can be a benefit in some conditions, here it’s better to limit the system to zone focusing (few AF points) or single-point AF mode, to prevent misfocused shots due to peripheral or background objects. 2 SET F/STOP When subjects are more distant, try opening up the aperture to let as much light into the camera as possible. 2 HOURS We’re all used to seeing portraits with lovely background bokeh, but what about a different kind of blur? Motion blur can give your portraits a dynamic sense of speed, and blur the surroundings into gorgeous silky streaks. In this project we’ll look at how it’s done. First we’ll show you how to shoot subjects in moving cars to capture both stunning blurred trails of light and a sharp subject in a single frame, then we’ll explore a few other methods for shooting beautiful motion-blurred backgrounds. This can be something of a balancing act in terms of our camera settings. 1 SELECT THE SUBJECT Open a portrait in Photoshop and go to Select > Subject. Grab the Quick Selection Brush and paint to add any other areas to the selection, or hold Alt and paint to subtract. Go to Select > Select and Mask. There’s no beating the versatility of a standard zoom lens for everyday shooting, and for many, the preferred option is a ‘trinity’ zoom with a 24-70mm range and a constant aperture of f/2.8. It’s not always an affordable option though, with Canon, Nikon and Sony lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras costing upwards of £2,000 /$2,000, and on relatively lightweight bodies they can feel a bulky mismatch. However, the good news is that they aren’t the only option. Tamron brought something different to the market with its 28-75mm f/2.8 standard zoom for Sony mirrorless cameras. Naturally, it’s not so generous in its wide-angle coverage as a 24-70mm lens, but it adds a few millimetres at the telephoto end while retaining that f/2.8 constant aperture, and it does so in a compact…

Tamron has announced a new version of its 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD standard zoom for Fujifilm X-mount cameras. The lens, which is already available for Sony E-mount, combines built-in Vibration Compensation with a constant f/2.8 aperture, which gives it a slight edge over its closest Fujifilm-branded competitor, the pro-spec Fujinon XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR, which doesn’t feature stabilisation. The Tamron is also cheaper than the Fujinon lens, with an expected retail price of £829 /$799 versus £979 / $1,199 for the Fujifilm alternative. The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is an APS-C lens, and offers an equivalent focal range of roughly 26-105mm in full-frame terms. It’s highly frustrating if you’re sorting through your images post-shoot and are unable to remember exactly where a photo was taken. This can be a real problem, especially for detail shots that lack context. If your camera has an integrated GPS, activate this before shooting to embed location data in the image files. A travel photographer has one main goal – to transport their audience to a new location and give them a view of this place through the eyes of a local resident. The reason why many viewers love to sit and gaze at travel imagery is that they wish to understand how people across the world live, discovering uplifting similarities and fascinating differences. Buildings are not only the structural units that make up a city, they’re the product of decades or even centuries of culture and history. The way a city’s buildings are designed says a lot about every aspect of the society in which they’re found – climate, religion, history and cultural aesthetics. For this reason, we can use architectural imaging when travelling to tell a story about a place. Intense, bold colour is a common theme in travel photography, and often this will make or break an image series. Where it’s present, such contrasting areas of colour can overwhelm the frame if used without care, or they can act as a visual distraction from other key subject elements. Ultimately, it’s the people of a place that give it life and dynamism. A city street, swarming with market sellers and traffic, tells the viewer a lot about life in an overseas location, and provides an identifiable element that anchors them in the familiar. From this, our audience can make comparisons to their own lives, and fill in the blanks with their imagination – the sign of any good story. This is the case even in remote locations; the lack of human habitation is in itself a defining feature. A trick many pro travel shooters employ is to ensure that each image has a human aspect. 1 SELECT AUTO ISO Cameras today are capable of producing low-noise images above ISO1600 with ease, so activate the auto ISO mode to allow the camera to set the sensitivity based on your aperture and shutter speed choices, reducing your camera workload. 2 MINIMUM SHUTTER SPEED Set the lowest shutter speed the camera can select so that, combined with auto ISO, you’re confident that your images will be free from any camera shake. This removes the need to continuously check that the exposure is reasonable for handheld shooting. 3 CONTINUOUS SLOW MODE Select burst shooting mode to capture sequences of images in rapid succession, but choose continuous low. This will produce the best balance of sharp, ideally composed frames and precious card space occupied, unlike memory-consuming continuous high mode. 4…

1 SET INITIAL ATMOSPHERE Begin by taking control of the global image brightness by adjusting the Exposure slider and the Highlights and Shadows sliders. This sets the atmosphere for the shot, which in this case, benefits from slight underexposure. 2 MIDTONE CONTRAST We brought out the texture of the old stone walls by pushing the Clarity slider towards the right (+83). This adds midtone contrast, while leaving the global contrast neutral. The result is a more grungy feel that aids the next step. 3 INVERTED TONE CURVE Soften shadows by pulling up the bottom of the RGB curve to add a washed-out look. 1 SUCTION MOUNT A suction stand lets us attach the camera to the window of the car. This small arm with a tripod-like head sticks to the window to create a firm bond capable of holding a heavy camera. Ensure that the stand will hold the camera before speeding off, and wrap the strap around the wing mirror, just in case! 2 CAMERA SETTINGS Our camera is in Manual mode here with the shutter speed at 4 secs, aperture at f/18 and ISO at 1600. Travel has been somewhat restricted over the past couple of years, so it’s with a sense of cautious optimism that we can look forward to the freedom to explore the world with a camera once again. Travel photography is a popular genre for good reason – such images allow the viewer to immerse themselves in far-off places they may never be able to visit, while gaining an education in the cultures and customs of these exotic destinations. There is, however, a common misinterpretation of what defines travel imagery, and what separates it from other forms of image-making. While it’s fun to wander an unfamiliar city in search of interesting subjects, for professional photographers it’s better to go in with a greater sense of purpose. You need to know what you want to capture while you’re there, or at least be certain that you have covered every possible angle. Using a concentric grid system is an effective way to quickly explore all of the best angles of a given subject. Start at a landmark, then follow a pre-planned grid – an overlay on a printed map, for example – to move out in a star-shaped pattern. Indeed, with their location maps and tags, platforms such as Instagram are ideally designed to display travel shots. Bird Photographer of the Year is one of the biggest contests on the birding circuit, and a selection of preview images from this year’s competition has been released, showcasing stunning photos of birds in flight, feeding, and just flaunting their feathers. More than 20,000 images were submitted to this year’s contest, with a top prize of £5,000 up for grabs, plus additional prizes of photography equipment. In addition to being a “celebration of avian beauty and diversity”, BPOTY supports the charity Birds on the Brink, which provides grants for grassroots conservation projects to protect endangered bird species. TWIRL AN UMBRELLA If you can’t find any motion in the scene to work with, why not create some of your own? An umbrella like this (with colourful patterning on the inside) looks fantastic when twirled around by your subject. This was taken in Shutter Priority mode at 1/10 sec, aperture f/11, ISO100. Composites are one of the things that Photoshop does better than any other image editor. With a few simple selection and layer skills, you can combine several photos into one magical scene like the one above. For this video tutorial we’ve used free downloadable images from Pixabay.com.
