MANUAL MODE To begin, Rob told Phil to set his Canon EOS R5 to Manual mode so that he could take full control of exposure. The first setup was all about using fast shutter speeds to make sure the riders were pin-sharp, so Rob suggested a shutter speed of 1/500 sec and an aperture of f/4 to let in plenty of light. Phil also switched on Auto ISO, so there was one less exposure setting to worry about, enabled raw image quality, and selected the fastest burst rate. The Art History Brush is one of Photoshop’s more interesting creative tools, enabling you to quickly and easily turn any photo into a striking piece of artwork that’s filled with depth and texture. Painting with the Art History Brush almost magically reveals a filtered interpretation of your image, and by using different brush tips you can create a huge variety of patterns and textures. Samyang has announced its second-generation 85mm f/1.4 autofocus optic for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras. The AF 85mm F1.4 FE II, which will carry the Rokinon branding in the US, incorporates two new features: a Focus Hold button and a Custom Switch. The Focus Hold button will keep the lens locked to a preset focus distance, while the newly integrated Custom Switch enables silent adjustment of the aperture by rotating the focus ring. Samyang’s optional Lens Station can change the function assigned to the Custom Switch, with more functions set to be added via future firmware updates. The FE II lens is also smaller and lighter than the original version. 1 THREE-LIGHT SETUP Our farmyard studio setup consists of three lights, although only the key light on the right was required for some shots. We set up in a barn not far from the chicken coop and goat stables. This way, we could grab an animal and take a few shots, then let them wander off back to their friends. 2 PLAIN BACKDROP A roll of grey vinyl fixed to two light stands makes a simple, effective backdrop. Vinyl is sturdier than paper and is less likely to kink or crease – and it can be wiped clean after the shoot. 1 SUPER TELEPHOTO PRIME LENS At most circuits, Rob usually needs a lens with a 400mm focal length. He has a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM, which Phil was using on his EOS R5 with the EF-EOS R mount adapter, while on Rob’s own EOS R3 he used the native Canon RF 400mm F2.8L IS USM. He always uses the lens hood to cut down on flare – this also gives him a pivot point to hold on to at the front for smoother panning. 2 SHORT TELEPHOTO ZOOM At some parts of the race track, Rob finds himself too close to the riders to use his long 400mm lens, and this is where a shorter 70-200mm comes in handy. A profile photo like this is a great way to capture a group of people or animals. We capture each subject individually – taking care to keep the camera angle and lighting consistent throughout – then combine the set of photos into a single frame that cleverly showcases the similarities and differences between each face. To shoot for this we use a single light, positioned to the side and behind the face, and angled back towards the camera so that it kisses the edges of the profile. This way, the near side of the subject is kept in deep shade, which not only makes for punchy, dramatic lighting, but also makes it much easier to combine the images in Photoshop afterwards without the viewer being able to spot the join.…
