3 HOURS Many of the best motorsports photos have one thing in common: a real feeling of speed. Fastshutterspeeds will freeze moments of action, and high-octane car and bike racing are perfect subjects for this treatment. At 1/3200 sec you can capture a crisp shot of a motorbike zooming round a circuit; however, you’ll also freeze the background and wheels, removing any indication of motion, and for all the viewer can tell, your subject could be parked on the track. To retain that sense of motion you need to shoot at a much slower shutter speed, but the problem here is that this will blur the entire subject. It’s a favorite with landscape photographers, offering precise control over the range of tones in an image that are selected and adjusted. Essentially, luminosity masking allows us to select particular areas of brightness. In our coastal scene above, it means we can target the bright areas of sky around the sun, or the dark groynes in the foreground, then enhance only those areas. There are several plugins that make luminosity masks, but to understand how they work it helps to know how to create your own, using simple selection shortcuts in combination with Channels in Photoshop. We often advise our readers to spend time becoming familiar with all of the functions and features our cameras offer, highlighting the importance of this over getting the latest and greatest model. Remembering Wildlife, the book project that supports conservation charities, has announced the results of its competition to choose images that will appear alongside photos from some of the world’s top wildlife photographers in its upcoming book Remembering Leopards. The book, which will be published in October, will feature photos of leopards by photographers including Marsel van Oosten, Greg du Toit and Will Burrard-Lucas, plus the 20 contest-winning images submitted by readers of our sister publication Digital Camera Magazine. The series, which began with Remembering Elephants and now includes seven titles, has so far raised more than £1 million for conservation projects.
