The Develop module is where you’ll spend most of your time enhancing your images and making them the best they can be. With options available for almost any style of photography, you’ll always be able to tweak your images subtly or delve deep into the colour, contrast, spot healing, filtered gradients and many other powerful tools so that your images look exactly how you want them to. Now that you’re happy with your edits, you’ll want to save your finished photos to your computer or hard drive. You can select and save a single image, or batch-export multiple images, or even all the images in your library. You can choose the format in which you want to save your image or images, and even apply your own watermarks if you wish. You may be a family portrait photographer and wish to send low-res files for proofing to a client, or create high-res print files once the job is complete. IT’S COOL, THAT THE BEST THING WE’VE SEEN THIS WEEK We’ve become accustomed to the James Webb space telescope capturing record-breaking and frankly jaw-dropping images of our universe, and it’s just notched another milestone by capturing the first image of an asteroid belt outside our Solar System. Astronomers studying the dust and asteroid belts around a young and relatively close star, Fomalhaut, found more than they expected, identifying three nested belts extending out to 14.3 billion miles, which is 150 times the distance of the Earth from the Sun. “The scale of the outermost belt is roughly twice the scale of our Solar System’s Kuiper Belt of small bodies and cold dust beyond Neptune,” the European Space Agency (ESA) explains. “The inner belts – which had never been seen before…

THE WEEK’S TOP HEADLINES IN PHOTOGRAPHY Nikon has unveiled its new Z8 mirrorless camera, and, as expected, it’s a ‘baby Z9’ in terms of both its specs and its price, which is considerably lower than that of Nikon’s current flagship. Nikon itself used those words in describing the Z8, saying, “In a nutshell, it is the baby Z9,” while it also calling it, “the true successor to the Nikon D850”. Essentially, the Z8 is a Z9 in a regular body (as in, it doesn’t have an integrated vertical grip or high-capacity battery). So naturally it packs all the same specs: a 45MP stacked sensor, 8K 60p and 4K 120p video, up to 120fps burst shooting, an exclusively electronic shutter, and intelligent AF built on deep learning. Once you’ve imported your photos, it’s time to start bringing out the best in them. With two or three simple tweaks using the sliders in the right-hand panels, they’ll immediately look better. Raw files will often look a little flat straight out of the camera, but that’s exactly how the raw format is designed; they’re larger files that allow you to draw the most out of them in post-processing. Within the Basic panel, you’ll find around 15 sliders that can often be sufficient to get your images looking great. ESSENTIAL PHOTO SKILLS MADE EASY 1 HOUR Landscape photography is often associated with sprawling vistas and beautiful panoramic imagery, but here we’re breaking the rules by ditching the wide-angle lens and using a long zoom. The 50mm focal length is generally accepted as being similar to what the human eye can see. Many of us get a little queasy when we’re left with no choice but to ramp up the ISO when shooting. We know that there’s a price to pay – and that price is often increased digital noise. Sometimes this can add character to an image, but often it just looks unsightly. With the aperture wide open at f/2 the above image was captured at ISO6400, which introduces noise, but it’s possible to fix much of that noise in post-production without sacrificing too much detail. One of the most powerful time-saving tricks in Lightroom is the ability to copy and paste settings from one edited image to another image – or many images. If you’ve moved through the workflow of making basic exposure adjustments, enhancing the colours, sharpening and reducing noise, and selecting a picture profile or even converting to black and white, you can now take your final finished image and apply the same treatment to the other similar images within your library.
