APERTURE CONTROL Paul explained that he usually shoots in either aperture priority or manual mode, and he set Rebecca’ Canon EOS R6 to perture priority, also called Av on the mode dial. This is a semi-automatic mode that allows you to adjust the aperture to let in more or less light; the aperture also dictates the depth of field in images. In this mode you can also adjust the ISO to control how sensitive the sensor is to light. The camera then works out the correct shutter speed for a balanced exposure. AUTOFOCUS SETUP Canon’s latest subject detection technology is astonishingly good, and the animal subject detection on Paul’s EOS R5 and Rebecca’s R6 works amazingly well. REBECCA’S COMMENT My favourite shot is this male grouse that we spotted just as it started to rain. I carefully got out of the car, trying my best to stay low, and waited for it to be perfectly in profile. I love how the rain drops have created fantastic beads of water, showing that great shots can still be taken in poor weather conditions. I put everything I’d learned into practise, focusing on the eye, waiting for the right moment and firing a fast burst of frames. ESSENTIAL PHOTO SKILLS MADE EASY 2 HOURS A water balloon can be a wonderful prop for action portraiture. Inspired by the portraits of photographer Tim Tadder, the exploding balloons look almost like wigs or hats of water when frozen mid-blast. Aside from all the watery fun, this project is also an exercise in lighting. In order to freeze the fast action of the water, we need to go beyond what our shutter speed is capable of, and instead make use of flash duration. Put simply, this is the length of time the burst of flash lasts, and with the right lights at the right setting we can make it as fast as 1/10,000 sec or more. 1 FULL-FRAME MIRRORLESS CAMERA Paul shoots on a Canon EOS R5, while Rebecca shoots on an EOS 1100D; however we were able to get hold of an EOS R6 for her to test out on the day. Both the EOS R5 and R6 use the Canon’s full-frame mirrorless RF mount, and they also have blistering maximum burst rates of up to 40fps, and boast Canon’s incredible animal eye detection autofocus. The big distinction between the two camera bodies is the sensor resolution, with the EOS R5 being 45MP while the EOS R6 is 21MP. 2 LONG ZOOM LENS Paul uses a variety of zoom lenses for his wildlife work, and which lens he uses will depend on what he’s shooting. THE BEST THING WE’VE SEEN THIS WEEK The British Veterinary Association (BVA) has announced the winning images in its latest annual photo competition. All the entries were taken by BVA members, either at work or when they were off-duty, and celebrate the bond that vets have with animals of all kinds. Entries were submitted in three categories: Vets at Work, All Creatures Great and Small, and Happy Pets. The winning and finalist images range from light-hearted snaps of pets to dramatic wildlife photos, and heart-tugging images of vulnerable animals under the care of vets, such as A Gentle Touch (above, bottom-left), which shows a ring-tailed lemur grasping a vet’s finger while recovering from an anaesthetic. EXPERT OPINION ON THE LATEST KIT www.venuslens.net £569/$499 Quite compact for a 90mm macro lens, this Laowa is nearly one and a half inches shorter than the brand’s previous 100mm mirrorless lens, but only a fifth of an inch shorter than the DSLR version.
