Want to capture gorgeous landscape photos oozing depth and atmosphere? While great landscapes can be captured at any time of the day, many photographers favour the golden hours – just before and sunrise and just after sunset – when the light is warm and magical, and the skies can be vibrant. Light found early and late in the day is both directional and soft – qualities that are hard to find together in any location with natural light at other times of the day. The sun’s low elevation casts long, inky shadows and creates contrast that shapes and defines the landscape, while skies tend to be at their most interesting and dramatic too. Many photographers who shoot in raw format set their camera to auto white balance and never change it, preferring to refine the colour temperature during the editing process. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with this approach. However, you should be aware that auto white balance, by its nature, is designed to deliver neutral colours whatever the colour temperature of the ambient light, and therefore shooting with the auto white balance setting on is likely to remove some of the natural warmth of golden-hour shots and desaturate naturally colourful skies, becaue the camera has misinterpreted the conditions as being a colour cast. “AUTO WHITE BALANCE IS DESIGNED TO DELIVER NEUTRAL COLOURS WHATEVER THE AMBIENT LIGHT” While it’s simple enough to restore natural warmth and colour during editing and processing in programs…

Bright, colourful dawn and dusk skies make the best backdrops for capturing a subject in silhouette. Silhouettes are the most extreme form of backlighting, with the subject recorded as a solid dark shape, devoid of colour or detail. Strong, instantly recognisable objects work best in silhouette – for example, buildings, a skeletal tree, landmarks, and windmills. To capture a pure silhouette, sandwich your subject between the sun (or bright sky) and your camera. By correctly exposing for the bright sky, you will dramatically underexpose the subject. Avoid using graduated filers, and use your camera’s live histogram to guide your choice of exposure – expect to see a spike to the left of the histogram to indicate that parts of the scene are dark and underexposed. Fujifilm has announced the X-S20, the successor to the X-S10, its user-friendly all-purpose mirrorless camera. The X-S10 won over fans with its strong specs and compact design, which includes an articulating screen for vlogging, and the X-S20 improves on the original with longer battery life and 6K video. The headline feature of the X-S20 is its new and improved battery, the NP-W235, which is used in more premium Fujifilm cameras such as the X-T5 and X-H2. Fujifilm claims this is good for around 800 shots, which is more than double the X-S10’s 325 shots. One of the biggest challenges photographers face when shooting during the golden hours is high levels of contrast. With the sun close to the horizon, the skies are bright and intense, and although modern cameras have impressive dynamic range, they can struggle to capture scenes where the sky is bright but the land is dark. One way to balance the light is to use a graduated neutral-density filter. By positioning the dark part of the filter over the sky, you can balance the light and capture natural-looking results. Grads are best used in combination with a holder, which allows you to move the filter up and down as required. Wait on location to see if an afterglow appears. Don’t fixate on where the sun is rising or setting – colour can radiate anywhere. Look behind you – there may be an even better shot, with pastel colours and soft light in that direction.…

Pointing your camera at a rising or setting sun dramatically increases lens flare, which occurs when a strong light source hits the lens and the light is scattered. It normally appears as colourful circles or rings, or a diffused hazy effect that reduces contrast. Flare is almost unavoidable when including the sun within the frame, but the issue is compounded by lens flaws, such as dirty or scratched optics or filters. Although flare can be attractive and enhance the atmosphere in some images, it’s normally best avoided. If you’re not using a filter system, attach a lens hood, or shield the lens using a piece of card or your hand, or try using your body to shade the camera. Focal length is used to determine a lens’s angle of view, which is what you see when you look through your camera’s viewfinder. It’s measured from the point where rays of light converge within a lens (the point of convergence) to the camera’s sensor (or film), and is calculated while the focus is set to infinity. Sony has announced the Z-V1 II, which it’s billing as the ultimate successor to the Sony ZV-1, which it launched back in 2020, and which is the oldest in its ever-increasing ZV range of cameras designed for vloggers. The ZV-1 II offers a wider zoom range than its predecessor, with an 18-50mm f/1.8-4 Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T zoom, rather than the original’s 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8. Sony says the wider lens is a more natural choice for vlogging, making the camera easier to use in selfie mode and allowing you to get more of the background in your shot. Diffraction is not always bad news for your photos. The golden hours, when the sun is close to the horizon, are the perfect times of day to capture a sunburst. Sun stars are the result of intense light refracting through the lens’s aperture blades, and add visual interest, drama and an added focal point to your landscape shots. Different lenses produce different effects. For example, a lens constructed with an even number of aperture blades will produce that amount of points, while a lens boosting an odd number of blades will produce double that amount of ‘rays’. While landscape photographers would normally avoid selecting their lens’s narrowest aperture because of diffraction, to create the best sunburst you’ll need to set an aperture in the region of f/22.
