SHOOT AT F/8! Tom M says… Tom was using Manual exposure mode, but for landscape photography shutter speeds are incidental as you’re using a tripod, so I prefer Aperture Priority mode, as it means you have one less thing to worry about. My go-to aperture is f/8, as this gives the optimum sharpness on most lenses. CHECK THE HISTOGRAM Tom M says… I encouraged Tom to check the histogram on the back of his camera after each and every shot to ensure he wasn’t blowing the highlights in the clouds or on the horizon. The Skin Smoothing Filter is part of Adobe’s Neural Filters workspace, which features a selection of filters that employ artificial intelligence to analyse image content and determine which areas adjustments will be applied to. Skin Smoothing can automatically recognise people and faces in your photos, isolate the skin and let you apply a softening effect. Pimples, spots, wrinkles, eye bags and rough skin can all be de-emphasised with a few clicks. Even a model with great skin, like the subject in our image, can benefit from some subtle smoothing. As you’ll discover in this issue’s video tutoria, the Skin Smoothing Filter gives better results than many other techniques; you can, for example, smooth out tones while retaining texture in the pores, which is essential for keeping a portrait looking natural.…

Laowa already produces several macro ‘probe’ lenses with high magnification ratios – but the new Laowa Aurogon FF 10-50x NA0.5 Supermicro APO is on another level. Currently specific details are restricted to a Chinese spec sheet, but this appears to be a single lens that’s supplied with four extension tubes. The focal length of the lens itself is unclear, but the supplied tubes enable 10x, 20x, 35x, or an incredible 50x magnification. The lens appears to be 167mm long with a 50mm maximum diameter, and weighs 447g. Minimum object distance is as close as 20mm, seemingly regardless of which tube is attached. The length of the extension tubes varies between 112mm and 253mm, meaning the combined lens-plus-tube length ranges from 279mm and 420mm. The focal length of the combined lens…

1 REVERSE ND GRAD FILTER Tom M says… A regular ND grad transitions from dark at the top to clear at the bottom, and is used for holding back bright skies to create a more even exposure with the foreground. However, when you’re shooting at dawn or dusk, when the sun is low in the sky, then it’s actually the horizon that’s by far the brightest part of the scene. With a reverse ND grad the darkest part of the filter is in the middle, with the sky portion slowly fading out in strength, which helps gives a much better balanced image. 2 TALL TRIPOD Tom M says… I use a Gitzo Series 3 XLS carbon fibre tripod with a Gitzo ball head mounted on a Gitzo levelling base. The Comedy Pet Photo Awards has announced the shortlist for its 2023 contest, and it features the usual rib-tickling selection of images of cats, dogs and other animals captured in humourous poses and situations. There are five categories in the contest – Dog: Our Best Friend, Cat: Our Fabulous Feline Friends, The Mighty Horse, All Other Creatures Great and Small, and Pets Who Look Like Their Owners. There’s also a Junior category for young photographers, and a Video category for those Candid Camera moments. As well as celebrating the comical exploits of our closest companions the contest has a serious side, as it supports a number of animal welfare charities. www.dji.com £1,879/$2,199 When DJI first teased the W launch of what is now the Mavic 3 Pro, it used the phrase ‘Inspiration in Focus’, which we hoped might be code for ‘a DJI Inspire 3 you can actually afford’. The pro-focused Inspire 2 came in two editions: a cinematographer edition with SSD recording in the five-figure price bracket, and a cheaper version that costs a bit more than the Mavic 3 Pro. What made that drone special was the ability to swap lenses, and even add a zoom. 1 HOUR Smart triggers enable you to do more with your camera. They differ from a standard cable release in that they’re controlled by what you’re shooting. The Hähnel Captur Pro triggers we used for this shoot (£100/$120) can be triggered by an infrared beam, light or sound, and even by a laser.
