ECLECTICISM In the 19th and 20th centuries, architects took traditional details from past eras and integrated them into contemporary architecture. When shooting these buildings, show more than one detail to combine the various styles in one frame. CYCLADIC The traditional architecture of Greek islands such as Santorini is captivating with its white design and blue details. To showcase this style of building, shoot wide and exclude surrounding elements in colour to add a minimalistic touch. BRUTALISM In the 1950s, brutalist architecture was in fashion. 1 CORRECT LENS DISTORTION In Photoshop’s Filter menu you’ll find Lens Correction under the Distortion options. Select your camera and lens model, and the program will automatically correct obvious lens distortions. 2 GRID AND GUIDES To further correct lines with precision, activate the grid and drag guides onto your image – both options can be found under the View menu. Using monochrome in architectural photography is a common visual strategy that allows the viewer to focus on the form and structure of a building. Colour can often be distracting, so removing it softens any unnecessary elements in the photograph. The reason why I love this particular photographic genre is that it never restricts my creativity. In some of my photographs, the viewer knows exactly what they are looking at – it’s an accurate representation of the building and its purpose – but making the photo visually appealing and intriguing is more significant to me. Capturing the vibrant energy of a dancefloor after a wedding is a real technical challenge. There’s little light to work with, and focusing on moving subjects in the near-dark isn’t an easy task, even for the most capable mirrorless cameras. While a fast prime lens and a high ISO setting will allow you to preserve the ambient light and produce atmospheric pictures, one sure-fire way to shoot truly dynamic dancefloor photos is to use the shutter-drag technique. Nikon has announced the Nikon Zf, finally adding a full-frame model to its vintage-inspired range of digital cameras. It follows the APS-C Nikon Z fc, which was released in 2021, and which by Nikon’s account has been a huge success. The market has shown a clear appetite for cameras with retro styling and manual dials aping the design of old-school film cameras like Nikon’s own FM2, which still remains a popular choice for film fanatics today. Among design cues taken from the FM2, the Nikon Zf has larger dials made of brass, and a fully magnesium alloy metal body with an artificial leather-covered grip. When it comes to publishing your architectural photographs, it’s crucial to understand the legal position. Since you created the photograph, it seems logical to assume that you own the copyright. However, this is only half true. Some buildings and architectural features, such as the light design on the Eiffel Tower, are copyrighted, with the copyright belonging to the architects and designers. Taking photos of buildings from public spaces is permitted; however, copyright protection for architecture was granted in 1990, meaning that there’s protection for buildings built after that date, but not before. In the UK, photographers can take photos of buildings built before 1990 under Section 120 of the Copyright Act, unless the building cannot be viewed from a public space and photographing it means stepping on private property without…

To capture an accurate portrayal of a historical complex for future generations, it’s crucial to adopt an impartial viewpoint and present a neutral perspective. One good way of doing this is to pick out one ‘main’ building and position yourself square-on to it. Here, we would also recommend using a wider frame so that the architectural elements can be included in their significant features. To achieve a comprehensive representation of a complex structure, it’s best to capture a scene that provides buildings in the foreground, middle, and background. 1 EDIT IN QUICK MASK MODE In Photoshop, press the Q key to start working in the Quick Mask mode. The winners of Ocean Photographer of the Year 2023 have been announced, with 25-year-old marine biologist Jialing Cai taking the top prize for her amazing image of an ethereal-looking paper nautilus or argonaut, a species of octopus, drifting through the ocean depths on a piece of debris. The ‘paper’ in the name refers to the paper-thin egg case that females secrete. Cai captured the image during a night or ‘blackwater’ dive, following a volcanic eruption in the Philippines. She wins a prize bundle that includes a £1,500 cash prize, plus the opportunity to join an Ocean Census expedition.
