Light modifiers are a crucial tool for professional photographers. For example, a softbox can soften the studio light and enhance the subject’s face in a flattering way. If you’re looking to create dramatic lighting, an umbrella is an excellent choice, while a shoot-through type can provide softer light, as it can be placed closer to the subject. A scrim functions similarly to a softbox, but can be placed individually, since it’s not attached to the light source. Additionally, modifiers are not only available for studio lighting but also for speedlight photography. How did your photographic journey begin? I really started to take an interest in photography back in 2015 on a trip to New York City. I owned a Canon 1300D at the time, so I took it along with me and started capturing iconic locations and scenes – the Chrysler Building, yellow taxis, steam pipes. However, the photos weren’t how I envisaged them. That was when I decided to look into photography in depth, learn how to use my camera properly, and find out what makes a ‘good’ photo. From 2017 to 2020 I was a street photographer, and I used this time to hone my skills. History Hit, the history podcast and content platform, has unveiled the winners of the 2023 Historic Photographer of the Year competition. The contest challenges photographers to capture historic sites and subjects, from trains and boats to castles and battlefields, in innovative and thought-provoking ways. This year’s overall winner was Josh Dury, for his magical photograph of sunrise illuminating the mist-shrouded Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. As well as the overall winner, prizes were awarded in Historic England and World History categories, and the competition attracted more than 1,000 entries. 1 USE DENOISE The Denoise command in Camera Raw/Lightroom can work wonders on image noise. With fog, you might notice graininess in otherwise smooth areas of the image. If so, try using the Denoise button in the Detail panel to improve it. It’s also worth sharpening the image here to enhance fine details. 2 TRY B&W Fog and mist can desaturate colours, leaving scenes looking almost monochrome, so ask yourself if the remaining colour is necessary. Removing it might lead to a stronger, simpler composition. The black and white profiles in Camera Raw/Lightroom offer an range of one-click mono conversions to try. 3 TINTING TRICKS A tweak to the colours or a tinting effect can enhance the misty atmosphere. When it comes to taking portraits, remember that capturing the entire face of the subject is not always necessary. In fact, going in close and showcasing your subject by focusing on a particular facial feature, such as the eyes or mouth, can make for an effective composition. To maximise your creative opportunities, use a versatile zoom lens rather than a prime lens. This will allow you to experiment with different crops and angles effortlessly. Whether it’s a dense pea-souper or an ethereal morning mist, the magical thing about fog is how it can completely transform even the most mundane scene into something stunning. There are two main ways in which it does this. First, it’s about the atmosphere – fog creates a mood all of its own. In visual terms, it diffuses the light and mutes the colours, but on an emotional level it suggests calmness, serenity or mystery, and it allows you to create landscape photos that evoke those feelings. The second reason is purely visual: mist and fog creates separation. Normally, the higher the air, the cooler it becomes. But sometimes a high layer of warm air can trap a cooler layer of air near the ground. In these conditions, a cloud inversion – or more accurately a temperature inversion – can occur. It happens more often in autumn and winter, when the longer nights allow the air to be cooled by the ground. You can deduce the likelihood of a cloud inversion by checking the temperature at various elevations (see the Ventusky app or www.ventusky.com). 1 WHAT IS FOG? Fog is essentially a low-level cloud, formed of tiny floating water droplets that originate from a body of water, like the sea mist here. There are several different kinds of fog. Sea fog occurs when warm, moist air passes over cool water. If the wind is blowing towards land, it carries the fog with it. 2 DISTANCE & CLARITY Think about the distance between the camera position, the subject and the backdrop. The Landscape Mixer tool is one of Photoshop’s new range of filters that uses artificial intelligence to automatically enhance your photos, taking elements from other landscape photos and mixing them in with your own images. In the example above, the filter has mixed in a sunset mood from another photo, and added a long-exposure look to the sea to give the choppy waters a misty quality. As with most automated tools, the results can be impressive, and the technology at work here is truly impressive; the ability to automatically recognise the different parts of a photo and then splice in another landscape is genuinely impressive.
