MANUAL MODE To control your aperture, shutter speed and ISO independently, you need to shoot in Manual mod. As pro Paul explains: “Manual mode means you can set both the aperture and shutter speed for an exposure of your city scenes to suit your eye, not what the camera thinks, so we could set a mid-range aperture and a shutter speed for good brightness levels in the shots. Lens maker 7Artisans has announced its first autofocus lens, the 7Artisans AF 50mm f/1.8, designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. We’ve seen a recent shift from lens manufacturers who have previously focused on manual-focus lenses, with TTArtisan, Sirui, and Samyang all now offering an AF lineup for mirrorless, and 7Artisans has now followed suit, with a fan-favourite nifty fifty. The company teased the new lens, which is due to be released before the end of this month, on social media, in an image showing it attached to a Sony A-series camera. Promotional text on the image states that it will be available for Sony FE mount, but it doesn’t provide much else in the way of information. 1 TIMING IS EVERYTHING We arrived on location an hour before sunset, to get in position, ready to capture the magic blue hour, when there are amazing blue colours in the sky; the sky quickly turns much darker as night falls. 2 BAD VIBRATIONS Watch out for vibrations due to passing road traffic, or lots of pedestrians if you’re on a footbridge, and make sure the tripod is on solid ground with rubber feet. 3 HANDS-FREE SHOTS If you don’t have a remote shutter release cable, use the 2 sec self-timer drive mode on your camera so that you don’t jog the camera and cause blur as you press the button. 4 DEPTH OF FIELD Consider how much of the picture you want to be in focus, and therefore what…

Converging verticals occur when we angle our camera upwards towards a building or structure – the straight vertical edges of the building can lean in towards one another, making it look as if the building is toppling inwards. This effect is exaggerated the closer you are to the building, and wider lenses can result in more pronounced distortion. You may be able to avoid converging verticals while taking the shot by stepping back, finding a higher vantage point or using a tilt-shift lens, but if none of these options is possible, perspective issues can usually be fixed in Photoshop or Lightroom. 1 STURDY TRIPOD & ADJUSTABLE HEAD A good tripod is essential for night photography, as most exposures will be too long to shoot handheld, and it’s worth investing in a decent pair of legs and a head. Paul explains: “This helps keep your camera stable for sharp shots every time, while a good tripod head is easier to adjust to get the horizontals and verticals of buildings straight.” Paul uses a Manfrotto 055XPROB aluminium tripod and 496 centre ball head. 2 CANON FULL-FRAME EOS CAMERA Both Pauls use the full-frame mirrorless Canon EOS R5. “The R5 is a brilliant camera, with a great 45MP sensor that captures a large dynamic range in raw images, ideal for retaining detail in the highlights and shadows in high-contrast night scenes,” says pro Paul.…

The Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers T (SINWP) has revealed the winners of its Bird Photographer of the Year 2023 competition, with Gianpiero Ferrari, from Leicestershire, England taking first prize for his wonderfully festive-looking image of a fieldfare enjoying an apple in his garden after a snowfall. “I started to take some pictures from the house through a window, but I was not happy with the composition,” Gianpiero says. “I thought a ground-level composition would be much better.
