You have to put yourself in the shoes of your least experienced crew and be aware that they may find boats intimidating. It’s down to you to help them enjoy themselves while feeling secure and useful, so here are my top seven easy-tolearn skills to pass on to new crew members. 1. Leech, roach and batten snagging A. Some old cruising skippers prefered a straight leech to do away with the chafe and bother of battens. In fact, the leech was often cut concave to prevent it hooking back on itself. Extra area could be added by having a ‘bumkin’ aft to keep the backstay clear. B. The roach is the bit of curved sail sticking out beyond a straight line drawn from the head to the clew. Battens in pockets stop it flopping about, and the resulting extra sail area was allowed within some racing rules. C. Aerodynamic research created beautifully efficient aircraft wings, which prompted sail designers to experiment with similar curved trailing edges. ‘Essex is a much maligned county,’ breathed my brother-in-law a few years ago as my former yacht, a Finesse 24, ghosted up the Roach towards Paglesham. Home build project Many years ago, I needed a new dinghy. The old one was a 10ft inflatable with a soft floor that was mostly detached from the air chambers. I had found it by the bins in St Tropez, and although it was pretty awful, it would get Flo and I out to our recently acquired Brittany cutter, Cap Horn. The nasty thing could be rolled up and carried on deck and, since we were very short of funds, it would have to do. Sailing Cap Horn to Soller in Mallorca is too long a story for now, so I will give that bit a miss and go on to our arrival. Not all Spækhuggers are the same. There are Family and Racing versions, the latter having wider decks, a narrower coachroof, no guardwires and a more basic interior. While Family owners are given a galley, a chart table and a heads – their relative positions depending on the layout – those going the Racing route have a much more basic (yet still neatly-finished) space below decks. The emphasis with both versions is on simplicity and robustness. For example, there’s little in the way of soft trimmings to start drooping, going mouldy or falling off, and no interior mouldings to waste space or restrict access. Last month, we concluded our project boat article by fairing the frames and stringers ready to accept the plywood hull sides. Finally, after six months of slotting panels together, bending stringers and applying countless epoxy fillets, we were just around the corner from starting to make our basket-like structure look like a hull. It was with some trepidation, then, that we cut out the first hull panels (supplied in 6mm ply) and offered them up. The kit allows considerable tolerance on the panels to cope with different builders’ interpretations of the correct sheer, but we were gratified to find that the panels matched our deck stringers to within a couple of millimetres, at least across the forward sections. When it comes to painting, there’s such an enormous range of brushes out there – costing from under a pound to over £10 per brush, and with a startling complexity of features – that it’s hard to know what to buy. We decided to put a selection of the most common DIY brushes to the test, and a shopping trip to popular DIY outlets B&Q, Toolstation, Force 4 and Screwfix offered up a good selection, ranging from cheap ‘value’ brushes to expensive, handmade, beautifully soft and flexible ones. We painted up some hardboard test panels, applying white one-pack International Pre-Kote to one set, and white two-pack Perfection undercoat to the other. In my dim and distant past I spent a number of years in manufacturing highend sports cars, and I remember that there was only cursory notice taken of how easy it was going to be to maintain aspects of the car in the future. Zoonie swung to her mooring buoy off Neiafu in Tonga amidst 38 other cruising yachts, most of which were waiting to leave for New Zealand to avoid the cyclone season. The Burnt Isles are a group of small, uninhabited, rocktrimmed islands in the middle of the Kyles of Bute. The islands have many little ‘Swallows and Amazons’ harbours, perfect for exploring. The islands provide good shelter for anchoring both to the east and west, and there are also mooring buoys available on the north shore. In my view, the best place to anchor is to the east of Eilean Mòr, the largest of the islands. The anchorage is sheltered from all wind directions except easterlies. If the wind is easterly, go to Caladh Harbour, less than a mile away. The Colintraive Hotel has six mooring buoys with pickups.
