It’s a dog’s life SOMETIMES YOU HAVE to leave your dog to keep a lonely vigil in the van when you go out for the evening. But not if you’re visiting Abergele, on the North Wales coast. A pet shop here has invested £100,000 in building a cinema and café for dogs and their humans. The Pet Place cinema, part of a £1.3m revamp to the business, includes a health store and play park, seats 40 humans on deckchairs and accommodates up to 50 dogs. The films shown are all pet-related, and snacks and drinks available for dogs include a bowl of Pawsecco and doggy ‘beers’. We love the layout of the pitches, as well as the cleanliness of site and facilities. Friendly and helpful wardens. Location convenient for shops and walks. Well laid out. Very clean. PARTS OF THE Midlands are overlooked, seen as somewhere you pass through on the way to your holiday. But they have a key role in our history, and there’s plenty to see. One good example lies just outside Atherstone, in Warwickshire, where you’ll find the unassuming village of Mancetter. This is believed to be the site of a Roman fort, at a key point on Watling Street (which is now roughly followed by the A5). Caretta caravans available again in the UK A TURKISH BRAND of teardrop caravans is returning to the UK after a Manchester-based motorhome dealer agreed to take it on in its first move into caravans. Caretta caravans, built by Başoğlu Karavan, were last sold in this country through Daventry- and Hitchin-based Venture Caravans. They have now been taken on by Bury-based TMC Motorhomes, which is expanding its site by 1.5 acres to accommodate both the new caravans and new motorhomes it is taking on. Whisky Galore! Follow the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail and you will take in some really glorious scenery as the River Spey winds its way from the Cairngorms to Spey Bay. The trail comprises nine sites, eight distilleries and one cooperage, where you can learn how barrels that once held sherry from Spain and bourbon from the US are repurposed for the malt whisky industry. It’s fascinating to watch the skill of the coopers, who work very fast because they are paid by the piece. Baby drivers A scheme to let children have their own experience of towing a mini-caravan is returning to the Manchester Caravan and Motorhome Show after its successful launch last year. Artists and photographers use the rule of thirds to enhance their compositions, because it really works. But how? If you place your main subject in the middle of the frame, it will appear static – you create empty surrounding space that is rarely interesting. By using the rule of thirds, however, you use the space more effectively and draw the eye through the image. Use the rule of thirds to divide the sky and the ground, and you’ll find the ratio of light (sky) and dark (ground) is more effective. Generally, this comes down to the fact that we don’t like to view things in equal measures. But rules are, of course, made to be broken, so experiment with composition and see what works for you in any given scene.…

Heavy-duty suspension designed to handle payloads over a tonne leaves little room for finesse. However, the latest pick-ups (think Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara and VW Amarok) are easier to live with, having much improved ride and handling. The SsangYong Musso can take its place alongside them, certainly as a tow car. MANY SITES OFFER a boosted TV signal – you simply plug one end of your coaxial cable into the socket on the site’s electric hook-up bollard and the other into the back of the TV. That’s all very well in warmer weather, but in winter, it means either leaving a window open so the lead can be fed through, or missing programmes so you can unplug it and close the window. It can also mean coaxial cable trailing through the caravan. In addition, many caravans, especially the fixed-bed models, have more than one TV point. Who are your customers? It varies, but some people have been coming back here for many years. We see lots of backpackers with tents; they say they feel quite safe because the site is very welcoming. We get a lot of people touring in motorhomes, too, following the North Coast 500 route. The split is very much 50/50 for caravans and motorhomes, although it depends on the time of year. If you are looking for somewhere to have a picnic, there is a little road off the A95 near Speybridge, which will take you down to the river. It’s marked with a parking sign. There’s parking to the left, but if you follow the road to the end, there is more parking near a cemetery. From here, you can watch the salmon jump during the autumn. According to the current UK law on ebikes, you are limited to 15.5mph with electric assistance. Any more than that and you’ll have to pedal with your own power. Trouble is, unless you’re going up a hill, exceeding that speed limit is pretty easy to do (provided you’re relatively fit), so you end up spending much of your time wishing for more power higher up in the speed range. While you could, in theory, de-restrict a normal ebike if you were that type of person – not that we’d ever recommend doing so, of course – to give you a much higher top speed with motor assistance, there’s actually a better way to do it, which also happens to be perfectly legal, if somewhat more drawn-out. Roundstone has been an Adria and Compass dealer, but this season its focus is solely on Compass in terms of new tourers. It has a sizeable stock of used models. Owned by the Morris family and managed by Sharon and commercial director Steve Holloway, the firm has an NCC-approved workshop and an accessory shop. Sharon thinks the smaller size of the dealership is part of its attraction, and being based near the Channel ports attracts customers from further afield – they recently sold a van to a family who had come all the way from Germany.
