THE CITY OF Oxford has, over time, created more than its fair share of resident children’s authors. C.S. Lewis, Kenneth Grahame and Lewis Carroll are mentioned in this article, but J.R.R. Tolkien, author of another children’s classic, The Hobbit, should not be forgotten. Nor should contemporary children’s authors such as Philip Pullman. Indeed, a look on the website of The Story Museum (www.storymuseum.org.uk), a children’s museum based in Oxford, indicates more than 120 children’s authors who have lived in the city or Oxfordshire.
The museum is good place in which to explore these writers and more, via a chain of exhibitions and events.
