Way to go From the UK, there are several ferry crossings to Ireland. We took the Stena Line service from Fishguard in Wales, which docks in Rosslare. It was then an easy 45-minute drive to our campsite in Duncannon. Alternatively, you could go for the Holyhead-to-Dublin crossing, or start in Northern Ireland with the Liverpool- or Cairnryan-to-Belfast routes. I had a wonderful drive in the new VW Grand California this month. But one thing did keep me awake during the night. Not the sprung mattress, which is super comfortable, but the price. The vehicle I was in will have an RRP of over £70,000. I know Californias have been shown to retain their value well, but you’d really have to commit yourself to serious motorcaravanning (albeit you’d be getting a great motorhome). As long as you don’t plan to hold crowded parties when you are on site, and are absolutely sure you won’t suddenly need to take someone else along with you on the road, the CV60 is an absolutely ideal solution for a couple on tour. You can lounge all day on the daybed and feel almost at home, yet still have a separate eating area. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 The Consumer Rights Act (CRA) is designed to make consumer law easier to understand, so customers can buy and businesses can sell in confidence, each knowing where they stand. Coming into force in 2015, the Act consolidated some 12 pieces of consumer-related law (including the Sale of Goods Act and Supply of Goods and Services Act), aiming to reduce it to three – Consumer Protection Regulations, Consumer Contracts Regulations and the CRA. 2010 (60) AUTO-TRAIL APACHE 634 SE Nine years old and as good as new? After four owners? You’d better believe it. Even by typical coachbuilt standards (4000 a year is normal), this is low-mileage. And that’s reflected in the overall condition. The SE denotes the £999 Special Edition pack, with lots of extras – cab air-con, awning, stereo upgrade, reversing camera and more. I liked the Holiday Hotshot Star Picture in issue 224 so much, that it has spurred me into sending in my own pictures. I like a bit of improvisation and think there’s nothing better than a ’van converted for pennies and someone living the dream in it. I’m on my third self-built campervan. A London to South Wales road was first proposed in the 1930s, and approved in the 1940s, but it wasn’t until the late 1950s and early 1960s that work began, when the necessity for an improved network became crucial to the local economy. Work started on the Welsh section with the 5.5-mile Port Talbot bypass, which opened in 1966 (as part of the A48). The Severn Bridge followed in 1966 and the Newport bypass in 1967, with a further 30 miles completed by 1977. It was 17 more years before the 80 miles of motorway was finished. There are many factors that can affect your fuel consumption, such as vehicle weight, engine size and power output, mechanical drag, speed of travel and the biggest of all, wind resistance. I’ve talked about fuel consumption many times before, and perhaps for some motorhome owners, it is not the top priority. In fact, a couple of years ago, I added a tuning box to our own motorhome, the Duchess, in an attempt to improve the performance, specifically when towing my race-car. These devices are often cited as giving an improvement in fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is not a significant factor in our enjoyment of the Duchess, for several reasons. At last we have started the build proper! Last month, we finished by finalising the intended location of all fixtures and fittings, and producing a simplified schematic wiring diagram (1). In this, the 230V supply is shown in yellow, the 12V supply in green. Our first job was to cut holes in the roof for two Fiamma opening rooflights (2-4), closely followed by mounting the solar panel on the roof in a location where the cable-run to the leisure batteries would be as short as possible (5). Although this series is chronological, our task sequencing wasn’t 100% linear. Some years ago, I fitted an Alde Smart Control unit to our ’van. This enabled us to remotely control the heating, using my mobile, and I must admit that after my cynicism wore off, it was used to great effect, especially in cooler months. Perhaps the best memory, for me, was a trip to the October Caravan & Motorhome Show, when I was camped on the C&MC’s temporary site. The EHU was only 6A, so if I wanted the heating to work effectively, I would need to use the gas, too. Anyone who uses Alde heating on gas will know, it consumes it at a fair clip. Forgive me for coming back to end-lounge coachbuilts so soon, but… well, there’s a lot of them about. And they’re particularly popular secondhand buys. They’re also extremely attractive to first-time buyers, especially those switching from caravanning. In addition, these layouts have long been produced here in the UK, so there’s a wide spectrum of prices on the secondhand market. Similarly, there’s a range of lengths of vehicle – some even offering extra travel seating towards the front. That’s not the case this month, where each model is strictly two-berth as far as travel is concerned. There’s nothing more British than a rear-lounge floorplan. 2010 (60) ELDDIS AUTOQUEST 120 Marquis Leisure is listed as an Elddis dealer, but most sales are of its special edition versions, badged Majestic. This ‘straight’ Autoquest, then, is rather a rarity. Yet it makes for a great pre-owned buy, especially for newbies. Autoquests have long been popular for keen pricing. You don’t get the spec of others here; although the counter to this is, there’s less to go wrong. This one, however, has the Luxe Pack, giving you blown-air heating, a Heki rooflight and a hab door flyscreen. It is shorn of items such as cab air-con and even a passenger airbag. V-Line was not the first high-top conversion from Auto-Trail: in the 1990s, it built Stag on Ford Transit, and Badger and Fox on Fiat Ducato/Peugeot Boxer. The latter two were available with an overcab Luton high-top (considered revolutionary in its day). When V-Line was but a twinkle in Auto-Trail’s eye, another revolutionary high-top was produced. The firm was, and still is, a dab hand at stylish GRP mouldings. Although described as a GRP high-top, it is actually a GRP roof-cap and overcab moulding that fits on top of the standard Ducato high-top, the steel roof of which has been removed and a special strengthening frame inserted. Knaus and Weinsberg campervans and motorhomes are even more stylish for 2020, and there’s a great selection to see at the Motorhome and Caravan Show this October – Knaus has its biggest stand ever (this year in Hall 17). After celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Weinsberg has launched its first fully integrated, A-class motorhome range for 2020 – the CaraCore – with three models featuring a double bed that lowers over the cab. For anyone who is considering investing in a motorhome or campervan, this, as far as shows go, is the Greatest Show in Europe, not only in terms of size, number of halls and stands, but also of the facilities that it provides to both traders and the public. The local airport is alongside, so you can fly in, should you wish, and stay at the hotel that is a free bus ride away. Or like us, you could take the camper. Bedford was the commercial arm of Vauxhall Motors, well known for its reliability and military versions of its larger commercials. It also became one of the dominant light commercial manufacturers in the late fifties and early sixties, with the CA model. Stepping inside the Benivan 122 at Marquis Leisure’s Surrey branch, I quickly decided that this was my favourite Benimar ’van so far. The reason? Comfort. It has parallel sofas at the rear, which meant I didn’t have to fold my 5’9” frame into the cramped space of a front dinette with the table in place. Also, its size: the Benivan was to be my home-from-home for a trip to Ireland I was sharing with colleague Bryony, and the compact dimensions would take the stress out of driving unknown Irish lanes. If you already own a motorhome, now’s a great time to book a habitation check – routine assessment of the living aspects of your motorhome – just before it gets used less (or not at all) in the winter. This is also the perfect opportunity to sort those little glitches that will inevitably arise with recent use. Habitation checks are offered by any motorhome service centre that’s part of the NCC Approved Workshop Scheme (see right). Evidence of these checks is also great reassurance that the motorhome you’re looking to buy has been well looked after by the previous owner(s). There is an ideal scenario when you decide to buy a pre-owned motorhome: make sure that your dealer is a member of the National Caravan Council (NCC) and its Approved Dealer Scheme. Simple? Not quite. The NCC is the trade body that looks after the interests of the manufacturers and retailers of caravans and motorhomes in the UK. But much of its work, including lobbying government, is aimed at improving leisure vehicle ownership for consumers. More than 100 specialist caravan and/or motorhome dealerships are members of the NCC’s Approved Dealer Scheme. Most sell new as well as used vehicles. At present, no members sell solely secondhand, but developments are afoot. It’s estimated that there could be some 350-400 retailers in the UK selling caravans and motorhomes. Appropriately enough for its riverside location, the Marquis Leisure depot at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, was originally a boatyard and swimming pool complex. It’s been a specialist motorhome dealership for some 20 years, but severe flooding back in 2007 meant every vehicle on the lot was written off. On the plus side, that paved the way for building a whole new service centre on the other side of town. It may seem a small sales site, but there’s provision for more than 100 motorhomes here, thanks also to a secure storage compound at the back of the premises. AT A DEALERSHIP Dealerships are great for seeing a lot of used motorhomes in one place in a short span of time. The prices will be higher than from private sellers, but in return, a dealer must tell you about any problems and the cost of rectifying them, and give the ’van a pre-delivery inspection (PDI) before you collect it. You’ll also be offered at least a few months’ warranty on used models, which is something you’re unlikely to get from a private vendor.
