The Select Subject command has become one of our favorite tools over the past few years – and now it’s seen a significant improvement that makes it far more effective at its job. The command uses AI to analyze the image, then recognizes and isolates the subject for you with a selection. Coupled with its sister tool – the Object Selection tool – Select Subject is one of the quickest and simplest ways to begin making a cutout or select an object. The updated tool now not only recognizes the subject, but also determines whether they are a person: if so, it refines the edges of the selection for you. Photoshop’s healing tools let you cover up distracting details in your photos, so they’re handy for all kinds of images – from tidying unwanted figures or sensor marks in a landscape, to removing spots, pimples and blemishes appearing on a subject’s skin. There are three tools we’ll look at here: the Spot Healing Brush, the Healing Brush and the Patch Tool. These are quintessential Photoshop features: they allow you to you to hide imperfections, which is what many people think of first when you say “Photoshop”. Each tool works in a similar way, in that each automatically fixes problem areas by sampling and replicating details from elsewhere in the image. Images have been given priority in the new Camera Raw interface. The Filmstrip now gives you different view options for hiding file names and ratings (accessed by right-clicking the Filmstrip or clicking the ‘three dot’ icon in any thumbnail), This has the effect of paring down the onscreen data, to allow more space for your photos. You can also choose to display the Filmstrip along the left edge (as before) or along the bottom of the screen, which is more like Lightroom. The left edge can be more useful when you’re editing portrait images, while the bottom edge will be better for landscape photos. Right-click the Filmstrip and choose Filmstrip Orientation to change it.…

The local adjustment tools in Camera Raw and Lightroom are one of the best ways to selectively alter part of a photo. Now their tonal settings have been expanded to include a Hue setting. This means you can selectively alter the color of objects in a photo. Previously, if you wanted to make a selective color-changing edit, you would have to either fudge it with a selective white balance tweak or use the color box option, which tended to tint the colors more than altering them (or alternatively open the image into Photoshop and alter colors there). Now, with selective hue control, you can make targeted color changes on your raw photos with ease. You simply drag the color box to change the targeted colors. There’s also a ‘fine adjustment’…

1 USE SELECT AND MASK After using Select > Subject to select the person, go to Select > Select And Mask to improve the selection edge. You can use the Quick Selection tool on the left to add to or subtract from the selection, and paint over problem areas with the Refine Selection brush to improve them. 2 PAINT ON THE MASK After making a selection, you can click the Add Layer Mask icon to convert it into a Layer Mask, removing the original background. Sometimes a mask will need tidying up to improve a cut-out. This is a fun project to try – you could pick an outdoor scene like this, or why not try a different genre of painting? Perhaps portraiture, still-life or abstract? We’ll use the Mixer Brush to give the photo the look of an Impressionist painting. If you’ve ever looked through the Photoshop Filter Gallery, you’ll know that there are several filters within that can be used to create a painterly look. But they are all rather blunt and universal… The great thing about using the Mixer Brush instead is that it creates painterly strokes based on the details and colors within the image. The toolbar has been moved from the top of the screen to the right edge. Adobe says this will help to cut down on endless tracking from one side of the screen to the other. This may be true, but for those of us with longstanding muscle memory that automatically takes us to the top of the screen, the new placement will certainly take a little time to adjust. The same goes for the panels, which are now in a collapsible list like Lightroom, rather than as icons below the Histogram. You might have noticed a new Camera Raw panel named Geometry: this is simply the old Transform panel renamed.…

The Camera Raw Crop Tool now lets you rotate the image rather than the crop box, much like its Lightroom cousin. The tool settings now have a dedicated panel that opens to the right when the tool is selected. The tool also offers several new overlays that adhere to different compositional rules. The idea here is that while cropping you can place points of interest along the lines and intersections of the overlays, to create a visually pleasing composition. Right-click to enable and choose from the overlays. Shift+V lets you change the overlay orientation, and Alt+V toggles through the list.…

1 ROTATABLE PATTERNS Patterns can now be rotated to an angle of your choosing. The feature is built into the pattern options, so it’s also editable and undoable. To add a pattern, click the Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers panel and choose Pattern. You’ll find the handy new Angle control in the Pattern dialog. 2 AUTO UPDATED FONTS Previously when you opened a document in Photoshop that includes fonts not in your library, you’d receive an error message telling you those fonts are missing. Now Photoshop will seamlessly download the missing fonts – as long as they are part of the Adobe Fonts service (previously known as Adobe Typekit). 3 ENHANCED MATCH FONT If you like a certain font in an image or design but you’re not sure what…

Photoshop has many types of layers and adjustment layers available, but there are six that you’ll find you need to use again and again. Learning how they should be used may seem a little daunting for beginners, but once you’ve got to grips with them, you’ll find they play a part in the creative process of almost every image you make. 01 LEVELS This should be the first layer you add to an image, because it fundamentally alters the tonal range of the entire image. Create a Levels Adjustment Layer, drag the Black point slider inwards until it touches the left-hand edge of the histogram, and drag the White point slider inwards to the right-hand edge.
