Richard Milner: Working on this book with Jay Matternes over the past eight years has been quite an involving journey through his remarkable life and art. He is still going strong at age 91. Although his name has been unknown to the general public, Jay’s work has been seen by millions who “grew up” with his murals at the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian) in Washington, D.C., and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Welcome to our sesquicentennial issue of PT. Hey, you don’t have to tell me. I can’t believe it either - 150th issue! At least if anyone asks me what I’ve been doing for the past thirty years, I can just say, read the mag. The Late Triassic Ischigualasto Formation Argentina was the home of a diverse fauna of rhynchosaurs, dicynodonts and rhynchosaur dicynodonts, large predatory archosaurs and the earliest known dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were rare here, making up 10% of the fauna and not easily associated with later major families. Eoraptor was a small basal saurischian, either an early theropod or sauropodomorph. Growing up in Montana I dreamt as a boy of digging up dinosaurs, of one day being a dinosaur paleontologist. But my dreams would seemingly be squashed with time as I flunked nearly all my grade school and high school classes, and failed to learn how to read. My father told me, and my friends, and all of his friends, that I was spoiled and lazy, and that I would never amount to anything. When Jurassic World: Dominion roared into theaters in the summer of 2022, it introduced audiences to something that had been common knowledge among scientists for over a quarter of a century, but was only just now making its debut in a big-budget Hollywood film—feathered dinosaurs.
