“Grass-Fed, Grain-Finished”
If grass-fed is the gold standard of healthy, high-quality beef, then this sure sounds like a close second. But nutritionally, it’s little more than a trick of words. “Basically, anything you buy that’s not 100% grass-fed is grassfed, grain-finished,” says Shannon Hayes, a farmer and sustainable agriculture expert. Most calves actually start out on pasture but then get shipped to feedlots to fatten up on grain. “Within weeks, the nutritional perks of grass-fed beef are lost,” says Hayes.
