Tiny deer ticks can cause big problems for humans as carriers of Lyme disease. This infectious disease is caused by a bacterium, Borrelia burg-dorferi, which is transmitted to a person through the bite of an infected tick. If recognized early, the infection can usually be eliminated by antibiotics. But if not promptly diagnosed and correctly treated, Lyme disease can persist and lead to a host of severe, chronic symptoms, including arthritis and nerve damage. Unfortunately, misdiagnosis of Lyme disease is common. One in 20 adults ages 65 to 74 has Alzheimer’s; by age 85, that number is one in three. And then there’s the gray area known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
