The more compact of the Lumix S series full-frame mirrorless camera bodies proved to be a bit of a hidden gem, but very popular with shooters who discovered it as an alternative to the S1 models. Now it’s likely to attraction more attention as Panasonic unveils not one, but two second-gen models. The new Lumix S5II is available now and the more video-orientated S5IIX will arrive mid-year. Canon has added two new models to its ever-expanding EOS R mirrorless camera system – one APS-C format and the other full frame. Both are essentially entry-level models, although the new full-frame R8 is still more expensive than the long-serving RP, which it might eventually replace. The styling is even quite similar with a lower-profile EVF housing and Canon is promoting the camera with the tag line “Take the step into full frame mirrorless”. At present, the R8 sits between the RP and the R6 Mark II with which it shares a sensor, processor, autofocusing, shooting speeds and video capabilities. Canon is clearly aware it’s legions of users of its entry-level and mid-level DSLRs with nowhere to go if they want to update their reflexes, so it’s filling out its EOS R mirrorless system has quickly as possible. Along with the EOS R8, Canon has launched the EOS R50 which is the entry-level model to the APS-C line of the family, priced at $1,399 with the RF-S 18-45mm kit lens. Incidentally, Canon says the R50 is also designed to appeal to anybody who is currently using the M50 Mark II which has been its best-selling mirrorless camera in Australia. Who knew? All the additional features available in Panasonic Lumix S5IIX are aimed at videographers, but they’re probably significant enough to warrant the extra investment – which is a quite modest $300 – for these users. The S5IIX is the first full-frame mirrorless camera to record directly to an external SSD (solid state drive) via USB-C, which offers significant workflow and cost advantages, and gives a bit rate of up to 800 Mbps. This USB-SSD output tops out at 5.8K at up to 30fps and encoded in ProRes RAW 422 or 422HQ. However, you can also record 4K DCI or 4K UHD this way at up to 60fps and Full HD at up to 120fps. We’ve noted on a number of occasions recently that things have definitely been looking up for fans of the Micro Four Thirds sensor size. There have been significant new cameras from both OM Digital Solutions and Panasonic, plus quite a number of tasty lenses. Panasonic is making good on its promise not to neglect its M43 system and the latest addition to the lens line-up is the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-35mm f/2.8 ASPH Power O.I.S. This is equivalent to a 24-70mm, so it gives Lumix G series users a new version of the classic f/2.8-speed standard zoom (replacing the Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH Power O.I.S. from 2017). It features a fully weather-sealed construction with insulation to enable shooting in subzero temperatures down to -10º Celsius.…

The new EOS R8 full-frame mirrorless camera and EOS R50 cropped sensor body have both arrived with new lenses for their respective systems, again with an emphasis on affordability. The latest RF-mount lens is a 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM standard zoom which is available as a kit option with the R8. It’s an extremely compact lens weighing in at just 210 grams, but still incorporates optical image stabilisation to give up to 4.5 stops of correction for camera shake (or up to 7.0 stops with the EOS R models that have in-body image stabilisation via Canon’s Co-ordinated Control IS). The optical construction comprises eight elements in eight groups which includes two aspherical types to optimise sharpness and correct for distortion.
