There are quite a few examples of camera companies losing their way as financial problems led to multiple changes of ownership, a revolving door of key personnel, and slashed budgets hampering meaningful research and development. The smallest and lightest Canon Cinema EOS series camera we’ve seen so far, the EOS C50 weighs in at a mere 670 grams and is smaller than the EOS R5 C body. It’s still a full frame camera using the RF lens mount, but with a new 7K BSI CMOS sensor (32.3 MP for stills) mated with the ‘DIGIC DV7’ processor. The combo enable 3:2 aspect ‘open gate’ recording for format flexibility including in the vertical, and internal RAW recording at up to 7K and 50/60 fps (in 12-bit Cinema RAW Light) using the sensor’s full width. Now in its 15th year, the 2026 edition of the World Food Photography Awards sponsored by Broccolini® is open for entries. OK, so it’s actually 50-200mm in focal range, but as it’s a Micro Four Thirds lens, the effective focal length is 100-400mm which makes the new PRO series OM System telezoom a first. Its full title is the M.Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f/2.8 IS PRO and it’s only the second OM System lens to have a white finish after the monster 150-400mm f/4.5 PRO. Already widely adopted by Canon and Sony for their telephoto lenses, the white reflects more light to help reduce internal heat build-ups which can compromise the precision of metal components. A part from again attracting a huge number of entries from all around the world, the 16th Epson International Pano Awards was notable for a large number of ultrawide panoramas, including those taken by the overall winner - Alex Wides from Italy. Alex was judged the 2025 Open Photographer of the Year and also won Open competition’s Nature/Landscape category. Entries were invited in the Open competition – for both professionals and amateurs – and the Amateur competition which obviously for non-working photographers. Both competitions have two categories – Built Environment/Architecture and Nature/Landscape. There are also a number of special awards and prizes. So you probably all know that the ‘M’ in Leica’s legendary line of rangefinder cameras stands for messsucher which is the German word for a rangefinder-in-a-viewfinder arrangement. So now that there’s an M model with an electronic viewfinder – and therefore obviously no rangefinder – is it still really an M? Discuss. Leica was bound to cause a stir with the M EV1, but on the other hand, it was always going to happen and, for the purists, the traditional optical viewfinder/rangefinder models will continue. Fujifilm has introduced its first professional digital cinema camera which is called the GFX Eterna 55. It’s built around a dedicated version of ‘GFX 102MP CMOS II HS’ medium format sensor – which is considered “large format” in the cine world – and the ‘X Processor 5’ engine that are used in the GFX series medium format mirrorless cameras. With its imaging area of 43.8x33.9 mm, it’s the tallest sensor available in a digital cinema camera and makes the GFX Eterna 55 both extremely flexible in terms of formats and also capable of an extremely high image quality. The EOS R6 Mark II is already a very capable camera, but Canon has added some extra fire power to the new Mark III model which steps up to 32.5 megapixels (effective) sensor, 7K RAW video recording internally and upgrades to both the AF and IBIS. The new sensor – the same as is being used in the C50 Cinema EOS body – has a faster read-out so a 40 fps continuous shooting speed is retained even with the higher resolution and burst lengths are extended… up to 330 JPEGs or 150 14-bit RAW files at a go. Sigma continues a highly productive year with the introduction of two significant new lens models. The Sigma 135mm f/1.4 DG Art is the world’s first autofocus lens to combine the 135mm focal length with the very fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 while the 20-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Contemporary is the world’s first 10x zooming range model which commences at the 20mm focal length. Both are good examples of the increased design freedoms that are now available with the mirrorless camera configuration. Not surprisingly, the 135mm f/1.4 DG Art is a beefy lens with a diameter of close to 112 millimetres – thanks to an extra-large diameter front element – and a weight of 1420 grams. There’s definitely no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to the size of digital camera sensors and each of the mainstream formats – from Micro Four Thirds to the “44x33” medium format – has plusses and minuses. Aside from M43’s obvious appeal for video – as illustrated by Panasonic’s Lumix GH series cameras – it’s the near 2.0x crop factor on which OM Digital Solutions is building its OM System brand as the logical choice for photography in the great outdoors. The GFX Eterna 55 camera is accompanied by a new G mount cine lens – the Fujinon GF 32-90mm T3.5 PZ OIS WR which is equivalent to 25-71mm and features power zooming. It’s Fujifilm’s first power zoom lens for film-making with a constant aperture of T3.5. With the GFX Eterna 55 camera, the power zoom can be controlled from the body or the top handle. With ‘open gate’ recording (i.e. using the Eterna 55’s full sensor area) and the full-width formats, the angle-of-view range is 81 to 33.8 degrees. This zoom also has built-in optical image stabilisation which is important as the new cine camera doesn’t have in-body stabilisation. Compact cinema cameras are another current trend and, not long after the Sony FX2 and Canon’s EOS C50, Nikon announced the ZR which is a Z mount model primarily designed for video work. The ‘R’ obviously stands for RED – the cinema camera-maker that Nikon now owns – and the ZR also carried RED branding. Nikon describes the ZR as its “first Z cinema camera” and it features an all-new body built around the same ‘partially-stacked’ 24.5 megapixels CMOS sensor that’s used in the Z6III and which enables a faster read-out speed. There isn’t an EVF, but the ZR has a large 10.1 cm monitor screen with a peak brightness of 1000 nits and in the video-orientated 16:10 aspect ratio. With its FE mount lens system now topping 80 models, Sony continues to add more with the latest being a G Master grade 100mm f/2.8 Macro with built-in optical stabilisation. This is the first medium telephoto macro lens in the high-performance G Master line, and it enables up to 1.4x magnification (i.e. a magnification ratio of 1:0.7) which is 1.4x life size. The lens is compatible with Sony’s FE teleconverters so the 2.0x unit will give 2.8x magnification while also allowing an even longer working distance (which reduces the risk of disturbing flighty subjects). Sony says the optical design has been optimised for macrophotography – i.e. shooting over very short focusing distances – notably chromatic aberrations. The very first Hasselblad X series medium format mirrorless camera – launched in 2016 – wowed with its oh-so-cool machined aluminium bodyshell which was a delight to both look at and to hold. The rest of the package however was – shall we say – undercooked in terms of its practicalities and functionality as a field camera. Hasselblad was still thinking along the lines of the more studio-based H series DSLRs so the X1D was a curious beast in practice… but the potential was very clear.
