SEW QUICK It's nearly fall, though the weather is still warm for many of us. Are you ready to start dreaming of apple picking, pumpkin carving, corn mazes, and cool-weather activities? Fall is my favorite time of year, so my answer is always YES! If you are starting to plan some autumn-colored quilts, this issue is for you. finished size: 64" × 74" Zen Garden is a fun way to use a jellyroll in a quilt. This design creates a path to move the eye through the quilt. If there are at least two strips of the same print, they can create a single row. If not, add a different print strip. I relied on my design wall to create the diagonal design created by the cream strips and plan how long the colored strips needed to be. When I was a child, my family held a crab feast on the eastern shore each summer, and this quilt brings back those sweet memories of sitting and playing with cousins and eating steamed corn on the cob slathered with butter and Old Bay running down my arm. Woven Maize was inspired by a basketweave. While cleaning my house, I looked at several baskets and thought, “How could a basket be interpreted in a quilt?” As I designed the basketweave pattern, I started by playing with the primary fabric in the background patches, and Woven Maize was born, along with two other quilt tops. It is in the middle of the wheat fields and wide-open prairie. They usually have a tractor to drive us out to where we pick. Some of the farms have a corn or hay maze for the kids. Our favorite farm also had a big cannon where they shot a pumpkin out into the fields! We have picked apples, blackberries, and of course, our pumpkins! One of our favorite desserts is Razzleberry Pie. The triangle: an essential element in patchwork, this little powerhouse of a shape is a key player in so many designs, from the simplest weekend quilt project to the most masterful showpieces. And for all its apparent simplicity, it can be tricky. Here are some troubleshooting tips to get the most accurate triangles possible! Totally Biased First of all, a triangle will have at least one edge that is on the bias, sometimes two, depending on the angle. When drafting our pattern instructions, we do our best to ensure that the straight-of-grain–which is more stable, and less prone to stretching than bias edges—is on the exposed edge of a patch or block. finished size: 64" × 80" finished blocks: 12 (14") BLOCKS These blocks are fun to make, but you need to remember to add the stitch-and-flip triangle corners before adding the next round of strips. The triangle corners provide the illusion of circular rather than square blocks. While a quilter can begin this quilt on National Sew a Jelly Roll Day, they will need additional time to complete it. By sewing for a few hours each day, I completed the top in a week. Stitch-and-flip corners sped up the quiltmaking process. finished size: 36" × 45" I designed this quilt because sometimes a fabric is so beautiful that I hate to cut it into little pieces. By presenting a large fabric patch in the center of the quilt, I can showcase that and maintain the integrity of its design and colorway. I then frame the center with a border of different coordinated fabrics that pull out the dominant colors in the central block.
