With the different blocks and fabrics, you just have to keep looking at the quilt. I love the combination of appliqué, curved piecing, and classic patchwork. This quilt makes me think of a vintage quilt made with feed sacks. I love the farming and rural community that I come from, and the sense of history and family that this kind of environment brings. Choose Your Thread Decide which color thread will look best on your quilt top before choosing your backing fabric. A thread color that will blend in with the quilt top is a good choice for beginners because mistakes won't show as much. (Choose backing fabric that will blend with your thread, too—prints are a good choice.) Which Width is Which? The backing fabric must be at least 3”–4” larger than your quilt top on all 4 sides. So, say your quilt top measures 44” × 44”. Your backing needs to be at least 50” × 50”. If your quilt top is 80” × 96”, then your backing fabric needs to be at least 86” × 102”. You get the idea. My mind went back to when I was young and went trick-or-treating with my best friend and her brother. Her mom would take us to local neighborhoods where we knew everyone. finished size: 77” × 90” finished blocks: 45 (6”× 10”) UNITS I‘m a quilter with a huge fabric stash (much like many, I'm sure) because choices are so many and so beautiful—and I have a very weak will. And I like creating quilts that are easily adaptable to using varying amounts of fabrics from my stash. My inspiration for this quilt was the absolutely gorgeous border print I wanted to showcase. My biggest inspiration was one of the great Halloween classics of our time—Hocus Pocus, of course! This quilt has a lot of room for customization. It would be easy to change to different colors, using anything from a classic Halloween color scheme to reproduction fabrics for an antique look, adding a whole new layer of eerieness. Fussy cut some fun and festive prints into the centers of the stars—or add some embroidery to them. Since all the blocks finish at 12”, they can be arranged however you want!
