This design came to Jenny as she sat watching the flickering light on the sea as she drank coffee. The effect is one that is recurring in Jenny’s work, where the play of light and dark creates a very real vibration. The body of the quilt is created by using eight half-square-triangle units from squares of two fabrics and the effect is created by the way that the two colour ranges are blended over the surface of the quilt. Rachael reminisces that her quiltmaking has markedly changed since she began this textile journey. This rich and evocative quilt was designed from a photograph that Jenny took in a lantern shop in the old markets of Dubai. The effect of the gold metallic print fabric of each lantern is enhanced with trapunto. Just before sandwiching the quilt top with the batting and the backing, a piece of polyester batting is basted in place behind each Lantern block to add a raised surface. The block featured in this quilt is the traditional Drunkard’s Path. Jenny has machine pieced the blocks using the ‘no pin’ method. This sampler-style quilt consists of only one block: Sisters' Choice. However, due to different dark- and medium-value fabric placements, they appear quite dissimilar to each other. Some blocks feature seven different fabrics, some have five or six and some only four, and in one block Keryn replaced some of the plain squares with pieced ones. To make this quilt you will need 20 blocks. The instructions include three variations. Simply choose which variations and how many of each you want in your quilt. Six by six rows of 6in Pineapple blocks make up the centre of this vibrant quilt, which is surrounded by black spot fabric and Flying Geese corners. The blocks and Flying Geese are made using the foundation paper piecing method. Robyn suggests that you colour one of the paper foundations with pencils in shades similar to the fabrics you choose to use, so you can refer to it as you piece each block to ensure you place the fabrics in the correct order. Dig into your collection of reproduction 1930s fabrics to create this delightful quilt made in honour of Jenny’s sister who passed away recently. Drunkard’s Path This block is also known as Solomon’s Puzzle, Oregon Trail, Endless Trail, World’s Wonder and many others (Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns by Barbara Brackman). The block is classified to be a four patch, and four of the four-patch units are joined to create the overall block. This block requires curved piecing and only two templates. There are two ‘tricks’ to sewing the pieces together: place the concave-curve piece on top of the convex-curve piece, right sides together — and, pin thoroughly.
