Patchwork blocks such as Hexagons or Tumbling Blocks have three seams that intersect in a “Y” shape and cannot be assembled with continuous edge-to-edge stitching. Y-seam construction requires starting and stopping ¼ " from the edge of the patchwork in order to create blocks that lie flat and do not pucker. The following technique simplifies Y-seam construction to “dot-to-dot” sewing. With a little practice, it will become second nature! There is no end to the options. Because it’s not just the ordinary hexagon—it’s all the other shapes that play nicely with hexagons. And it’s all the things you can do with the hexagons themselves! What is more classic than the humble Log Cabin block? Most quilters have sewn a Log Cabin block at one point or another in their quilting journey. Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Pressing tabs indicate the direction to press the seam allowances. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances.
