Shortly after the Japanese unofficially surrendered in August 1945, ending World War II, I was a 21-year-old sailor on liberty in Honolulu, Hawaii. We’d been at sea for over a year, so to arrive in Hawaii, where the people greeted us warmly, just as the war was ending, was an extraordinary feeling. We walked the city, sightseeing and enjoying the jubilant atmosphere. Street photographers snapped pictures everywhere to document the occasion. Excited children ran along with us, eager to be a part of the celebration. When America entered the war in 1941, I was 17 and living with my family on a Missouri farm. At that time, the government deferred farmers from active duty to aid the war effort at home. By 1944, however, with the war at its peak,…

Rayon, cotton and wool were poor substitutes. ▪ By the 1930s, the U.S. imported four-fifths of the world’s silk, 90 percent of it coming from Japan, and women’s hosiery accounting for about 80 percent of its use. ▪ That changed in 1935 when DuPont invented a synthetic fiber initially called fiber6-6, later renamed nylon. ▪ Nylon stockings debuted at the 1939 New York World’s Fair with nylon-wearing models strolling the fairgrounds. ▪ When the silklike stockings went on sale to the public in May 1940, 4 million pairs sold in just days. ▪ After the U.S. entered World War II, nylon’s use was restricted to making parachutes, tow ropes, flak jackets and other war-related items. ▪…

To keep them from disappearing too quickly, she used to store the tempting goodies out of sight. Somehow, we always found her hiding places! By the mid-1960s, Beatles’ concerts had deteriorated into screamfests where avid teenyboppers shrieked their lungs out. That was just one reason the superband ceased performing live, a decision reached (but not announced) on Aug. 29, 1966, at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. By then the Fab Four’s 100-watt Vox amplifiers had become all but useless against the clamor. And on that night, the Beatles, once used to playing sold-out shows, faced 17,500 empty seats. New problems had arisen—first was the backlash against John Lennon’s March 4 proclamation: “We’re more popular than Jesus now.” Then, the irascible Lennon had taken to replacing Beatles lyrics with shouted obscenities at the concerts, aware that he wouldn’t be understood. MY FIRST TRIP out of the U.S. was by far the most memorable. I went to Germany to visit the family of an exchange student we hosted the previous year. The hospitality they showed me whetted my appetite for further travel, and my checked-off bucket list grew to 40 countries and counting. My main objective was to experience other cultures and traditions. A trip to China taught me the most about embracing others. While on a Yangtze River cruise, I developed a short-term friendship with what I thought was a trio of schoolgirls on holiday. One morning in late spring 1979, I noticed an attractive young woman trying to enter through a locked door at the school where I taught art. I was 27, still single and looking for a meaningful relationship. I called to her to try the door next to it, which I knew was open. Unfortunately, she was gone before I could introduce myself. CURE IS WORSE THAN THE DISEASE My mother was a strong believer in using Vicks for a cold. She would slather it on my throat, then wrap my neck with a scratchy wool sock fastened with a pin. Or she’d rub it all over my chest so that my shirt would stick to me. Ugh, how I hated it. And, no, I don’t use this remedy today. There is already enough suffering in the world. POOLS OF DARK, STICKY molasses often appeared on the surface of these baked pies as they cooled. Some think the name “shoofly pie” has to do with keeping flies away. Another theory is that Shoofly was the brand name of the molasses used in the original recipe. ▪ Often associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch community, the pie made its debut as a coffee cake in 1876, when it was called Centennial Cake. ▪ Farmhouse cooks added crust to the original cake for easier transportation and hand-held eating. ▪ No matter the name, recipes for the confection create either wet-bottom (custardlike) or dry-bottom (cakelike) filling for the pies—it depends on the streusel used to thicken it. ▪ The best recipes always use molasses, never eggs.…

Down the street in my old neighborhood in Darlington, South Carolina, was a pond where one day in the summer of 1976, my friend Danny and I decided to try rig fishing. I’d read about the technique in Field and Stream: You attach a baited line to an overhanging tree branch, and when the fish hits the line, it sets the hook. We baited the rig line with a smaller fish and bided our time upstream. Meanwhile Danny’s brother David showed up with a couple of his friends. They weren’t all that interested in our fishing experiment—that is, until it worked. With a loud BAM! the tree limb slapped the water with the weight of a huge fish that was splashing wildly. Every Sunday, my parents and I started the day by going to Mass. After that, whenever the Chicago Cubs had a doubleheader, we were off to Wrigley Field. My parents are both from Italy. My dad was a butcher and would never allow me to have hot dogs at the park. Instead, my mom fixed Italian chicken with fruit, vegetables and, of course, wine for our ballpark picnics. Military conflicts throughout the ages become more personal and meaningful after we discover that a family member has served. However, those involved in military action may witness some horrific encounters. Support services such as those available today were not always around. Returning service members often kept negative memories to themselves or found other ways to deal with their experiences. Post-traumatic stress disorder, earlier known as battle fatigue or shell shock, takes a toll on a person’s post-service life. Hello, Age of Aquarius! As fashion entered a new era in 1966, I was there to greet it. I was Sweet 16, living in Fremont, Ohio, and witnessing the birth of the miniskirt. The standard fare at the time—below-the-knee, accordion-pleated skirts with white anklets and penny loafers—was a drag. The look did nothing for a girl’s legs and that getup made me look and feel clunky. Of course, my parents liked saddle shoes; they never wore out.
