From 1978 to ’85, my brother, Louis Belcher, was mayor of Ann Arbor. I was single, living in Battle Creek, which was 70 miles away. But whenever Lou was scheduled to attend one of those social engagements where his presence was required, he’d give me a phone call and ask if I could accompany him.
