The arrival of the Famicom Disk System in early 1986 brought larger games to Nintendo’s 8-bit console, but it had its disadvantages. The bulky extra unit required its own power supply, and had to be disconnected every time you wanted to play a cartridge game. That was unavoidable for existing Famicom owners, but newcomers would have a more convenient option via Sharp, under licence from Nintendo – the Twin Famicom, an all-in-one unit that could play cartridge and disk games as standard. Being a premium option, it retailed for ¥2,200 more than the combined cost of a Famicom and Disk System.
