There’s always been a dichotomy at the heart of videogame sequels. Publishers love them, an easy cash-in on the coattails of a successful forebear. Developers, however, generally view them otherwise – an unsatisfying mix of the earlier game plus an attempt to bring something different, but not too different, to the table when they’d much rather be working on a new and original concept. At least, that’s how Steve Turner, the man behind both Quazatron and Magnetron, feels. “It’s like with films,” he muses. “Take James Bond, for instance. You always see the same little bits come round and round as if they’ve cut and pasted different movies.”
Having completed the excellent magical adventure, Ranarama, for Graftgold’s publisher, Hewson, Steve was thinking about his next project when reality hit home.…
