■ In an early script for Reign Over Me, the 2007 drama starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle, the plot included a generic arcade shooting game. Sandler’s character was a man consumed by the loss of his family in the September 11 attacks, and his means of coping was to wrap himself up in gaming. After reading the script, the film’s editor Jeremy Roush suggested the alternative of working Shadow Of The Colossus into the plot, even going so far as to sit director Mike Binder down for a demo. ■ Monty On The Run is best known for its blistering in-game soundtrack but there was a second piece of music which played on the high-score entry screen. Far slower than the energetic main theme, its melancholy nature still proved to be highly memorable to the point that some fans believe it to be the finest chiptune of all time. The reflective feel of this particular tune was intriguing, players would be entering their high score and learning where they were in the leaderboard and yet any feeling of triumph was being tempered by the musical reminder that their successful session had come to an end. Nothing was going to bypass Sega on its mission to defeat Mario, so even the game’s music had to be ramped up to 11. The goal, therefore, was to fit the game with a soundtrack that was so much more than the usual midi beeps and boops. Sonic Team had something specific in mind and so it reached out to the bassist and songwriter of a band called Dreams Come True. Masato Nakamura had been inspired by the team’s dedication to take on Nintendo, and so he set about creating melodic tracks and then transposing them into digitised versions with only four sounds playable at once. After trailing Sensible Software in March 1986 via an Easter egg in their surreal 3D shooter Twister, Jon Hare and Chris Yates officially launched the studio in mid-1986. Following Twister’s success, Sensible delivered two more shoot-’em-ups: the budget Galaxian tribute Galax-I-Birds and the top-down blaster/arcade adventure Parallax. 1987 saw it release the highly original Wizball, which tasked players with weaponising a ball-like hero while colouring-in his grey world. ■ Earthion was absolutely conceived and developed as a Mega Drive-native title, which would mean a cartridge release. The team, however, decided to use a PC and console release to gather player feedback, and refine through updates. Eventually, the ‘final’ version of Earthion would be released to cart. As such, Bitwave Games stepped on board to build an emulation wrapper so the Mega Drive code would run on the modern target platforms. Peter Harrap’s surreal, smooth scrolling platformer Monty On The Run was an undoubted masterpiece. It’s a tough yet hugely enjoyable jaunt in which players were tasked with guiding a somersaulting, jail-breaking mole to freedom on a cross-channel ferry. The game proved popular on the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and Commodore 16 but it was the Commodore 64 version which really caught the imagination of gamers thanks to Rob Hubbard’s superb musical score. Composed in 1985 when Rob, a professional studio musician, was 30 years old, the game’s fast-paced main theme pushed the limits of the C64’s SID sound chip. It was based on Devil’s Galop, a rollicking tune composed by Charles Williams which gained wide admiration when it was used to introduce the radio serial Dick Barton – Special Agent. “Gremlin…

COPS AND CRIMINALS ■ New York’s finest are understandably upset to have a ninja on their streets, although arming themselves with shuriken seems like overkill! The big apple’s bad guys are equally well armed, so expect them to put up a fight. ALLIGATOR ATTACK ■ The final opponent in Last Ninja 2’s sewers is a fully grown alligator, presumably banished there when it got too big to be cute anymore. You need a Molotov cocktail to defeat it, and you have to assemble that from parts. CHOPLIFTER ■ Originally intended to be set on the Statue Of Liberty, Last Ninja 2’s helicopter setpiece instead takes place on a New York rooftop. HOW TO BEAT THEM: Simple really, hop from one platform to the other making sure to not get smashed. You can even fit a couple of hits in at once and it doesn’t take too long before Robotnik turns tails. EGG SCORCHER ■ Making the most of Marble Zone’s fiery pits of lava, here Robotnik sets platforms alight that would surely burn Sonic’s sweet kicks. Given the popularity of the Mega Drive Sonic games, it’s no surprise that Sega has made them available everywhere it possibly can. For accessibility sake, the best option would be Sonic Origins on PC and consoles, a bundled package of the three original Mega Drive classics, Sonic CD and 12 Game Gear Sonic games. It’s a remastering and does come with a host of extras like missions, unlockable modes or the chance to play as Tails, Knuckles and even Amy in any of the original games, but if you can, skip the modern nonsense and play them in Classic Mode with smooth 60fps gameplay. It has certainly taken a while to arrive, but we’ve finally had an extensive play with Analogue’s latest system and it’s bound to please N64 fans. If you’re unaware, the Analogue3D is an FPGA system designed to recreate the experience of playing on an actual N64. It supports games from all three regions, comes with numerous display options, as well as an upgraded version of Analogue’s OS. The machine itself is compact and stylishly sleek, fitting in with previous Analogue designs. THE GAME By the time Mega Man made his debut on Sega’s 16-bit console in 1994 he was already something of a seasoned platforming veteran. He’d made his first appearance on the NES in 1987 and once The Wily Wars had rolled around, his sixth NES adventure had already been released.
