For the 18th consecutive year, the weekend before Thanksgiving has been reserved for the Goodguy’s Southwest Nationals at Westworld in Scottsdale, AZ. Somehow this weekend seems to always be blessed with perfect weather and this year was no exception with sunny skies and temps in the low 80s. I can’t think of a better way to end the show season than to spend it with 3,000 plus custom cars in Arizona. The event had the usual events: swap meet, vendor and manufacturer exhibits, auto cross, specialty parking and the show and shine for all the custom cars and thousands of sun loving spectators. For the past nineteen years the Gulf coast of Mississippi has experienced a fall migration. It began with under 400 hot rods, but this year 7,639 registered hot rods, customs, muscle cars and collector cars of every description flocked to the Gulfport/Biloxi area for a week-long festival of cruising. The event is actually a series of events within the event. There are over seven different cruise sites, a big swap meet, an auto auction and an autocross course and seemingly endless great cruising roads. Of course Biloxi also has the casinos for those who like to hit the tables or enjoy the restaurants and big name entertainment. Next to 1932-34 Fords the most popular car that rodders modify on a consistent basis would have to be the 1940 Ford. Of the ‘40s, the most popular body style would be the coupe so when Jerry Groomer of Thorton, Colorado decided to part ways with his Deuce roadster he found a Forty in Bakersfield, CA and the owner was interested in a trade. Jerry brought the coupe back to Colorado and drove the “original dark blue patina” coupe as-is for three years and even though folks liked the look he no longer did. Groomer says “I had too much wax laying around the garage to not have paint to wax” and in August of 2014 it was time to “blow-it-apart” and get some paint on it. The coupe sits…

Day at the Track! The Burbank, California Road Kings club was formed in 1952 with a bunch of race car guys and has since evolved into a rodding club with 100 members and 21 honorary members. The club holds an annual car show with 100% of the proceeds being donated to local Burbank charities. On October 11th at precisely 7:00am the tunnel to the infield of Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA was opened and a steady stream of 300 rods and customs drove in for set up on the grass. The gates to the tunnel were closed at 9:00 since they don’t want the loud engines scaring the horses being exercised on the track. Fred Farrand lives in Saline, Michigan and has been a “car guy” all his life but has only owned a few cars of which one is a 1965 Pontiac GTO which he still owns. He, like so many “car guys” got the urge of owning a hot rod and had narrowed his choice down to a 1935 Ford 3/window coupe but failed to find the right car. After much thought he decided that the iconic 1932 Ford roadster hi-boy would be the right choice. In 2012 he attended the Goodguy’s event in Columbus and saw a chopped ’40 Ford that had the perfect stance, look, paint and workmanship. One of the southern California shops in on the customizing trend was Valley Custom in Burbank. Two guys, Neil Emory and Clayton Jensen were masters at moving the metal around and had the design sense not to push it too far. In 1951 RonDunn took his nearly new 1950 Ford to them. Over the next three months they sectioned it five inches which made the car a real head turner. Ron wanted the top left alone for driving visibility and even had the seat sectioned to gain headroom. The rear was lowered and fender skirts added. Push-button door openers hidden in the Ford side trim were added, headlights frenched and a ’51 Ford upper bar and smoothed hood were added next. Way back in early 2012 Barc Goodson of Lakewood, CO finished a 1926 Model T coupe with the help of his 12 year-old grandson. At the time he told him that when he turns sixteen (he’s 15 now) the car will be his daily high school driver. Once that deal was finalized his 8 year-old granddaughter decided that grandpa should build her a car and she would help. Barc, who purchased his first rod, a 1935 Ford coupe in 1952 has owned over a dozen cars since but had never owned a roadster, so that would be the car for Haleigh. THE HISTORY OF GLIDE Glide was born out of the idea by Jim and Rosemary Muller to create and manufacture quality replacement seat frames for classic cars, hot rods, pickups, and muscle cars. The original company was launched in 1984 in Vernon, California, and was called Rose Manufacturing.
