“ON 12 June 2023, a 28-strong England training squad gathered in Bagshot to start the long road to the World Cup and beyond. The party did not include Premiership semi-finalists, so was missing players from Saracens, Sale, Leicester and Northampton, but they would be added as soon as their five-week off-season had elapsed.
“Of that original 28, Marcus Smith, Henry Slade, Ben Spencer, Ollie Lawrence, Will Stuart and Sam Underhill made it to Auckland and the Test against the All Blacks on 13 July 2024, 398 days later.
