Over 60 years ago, as gay liberation swept the globe and the public movement for LGBTQI+ rights was sparked, lesbians were leaving their respective cities in search of something more. That more, was the women’s land movement, rural lesbian utopias queer women could escape to, where they would collectively purchase property and build a patriarchy-free community from scratch.
By the early 80s, it was estimated that there were over 150 dwellings of their kind, and since, a steady decline of the physical lesbian utopia has begun. Now, almost six decades later, obsolescence has become reality, and with it, a new meaning has emerged.
The spiritual idea of the lesbian utopia is rarely lost on lesbians and queer women alike.
