Lynette Yiadom-Boakye was born in 1977 in London, where she lives and works today. She is of Ghanaian descent. Lynette is best known for her portraits of imaginary subjects raising questions of identity and representation. Her work has contributed to the renaissance in painting the Black figure. The characteristic dark palette of her work is known for creating a feeling of stillness that contributes to the timeless nature of her subjects. These figures are rested in front of vague backgrounds, revealing expressive, short brushstrokes, dramatic tones contrasted with flashes of brightness. In 2018, Yiadom-Boakye was awarded the prestigious Carnegie International Prize and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2013. Currently, you're the Artistic Director and CEO of the Bernie Grant Arts Centre. Could you explain about your involvement and the background of the centre? I'm an Artistic Director and CEO, I'm responsible for managing the organisation. Which involves strategic thinking, especially for the artistic programme. It's been two years since I joined, we opened the centre in 2007. The centre is based in Tottenham, North London, which is one of the most diverse areas within the UK. The centre is based on the vision of the late Bernie Grant, the first Black MPs. One is that I love fairy tales, and I always had, but those older fairy tales, those Brothers Grimm type fairy tales, are very dark. They have some very dark, almost morbid themes, which I think are interesting because they were specifically geared towards children. For Cinderella is dead. I wanted to do something that was similar. It is about misogyny; it is about patriarchy, and how those things hurt everyone.
